Any ladies started taking Miralax prior to hysterectomy (11/5)

I will be getting my TAH November 5th. I took Miralax last night along with Colace. My question is will taking all of this prior to surgery set me up to have a belly ach? I don't want my Bowels to start moving so much that I wake up from surgery needing to run back and forth to the bathroom. That would be terrible to wake up in pain and have to get out of bed immediately.

Re: Any ladies started taking Miralax prior to surgery?

Does your Dr know you are doing this ? If you haven't told him/her ,you need to do that ASAP

Re: Any ladies started taking Miralax prior to surgery?

The night before surgery, I ate foods that I know help me go the next morning: black beans, pasta, things like that. Sure enough I had a bowel movement before going in to check in. I asked my doctor about bowel movements. She suggested I take Milk of Magnesia about 3 days after my surgery. That was all I ended up needing.

Re: Any ladies started taking Miralax prior to surgery?

Grammax3 : Miralax and Colace are both medications that have been prescribed to me. However I don't used them daily like I used to. My stomach is really sensitive and they both work like a charm when I use them. Thank you for your response.

Totally2: Thank you for the suggestion. I think I'm going to try eating foods that will help. I'm already so scared about waking up in pain. The last thing I need is to have my stomach hurting. I just don't want to deal with constipation after the surgery.

Everything that can be done for you will be done. Pain medications do cause constipation,so they usually give you something in the hospital,or tell you what to do before you are released . It is easy to say relax when I know how hard that is,but you will be in very good hands

Re: Any ladies started taking Miralax prior to surgery?

I started a small dose of Miralax a week prior to surgery before I knew I was doing a prep anyway. I went really well and by the prep time it made it very easy. You must make sure you are hydrated. So no crazy dose. Just enough to keep whatever is in there soft for post op pooping was my theory. And i started it the first day I was home again.

Re: Any ladies started taking Miralax prior to surgery?

I was on miralax for a few months before right before the surgery and they gave it to me in the hospital so i was fine with BMs when i got out of the hospital.
Always make sure to drink more water throughout the day with it.
And always make sure its ok with your doc and that people know your on it.
Then you should be fine with BMs out of the hospital.
Hope this helps

Like Grammax3 said, you shouldn't really have pain upon waking up. I opted for the epidural which feels like a pinprick that you can barely remember 'cause you are already on some "nice" meds, and that lasts for 24 hours. Then in recovery they knew that my pain tolerance was a 2 (the hospital called before surgery to ask what my number was) so I hardly felt anything at all before I got my next dose. My doc also gave me Ducosate Sodium stool softener tablets to take once at night and suggested the MoM by the third day.

Re: Any ladies started taking Miralax prior to surgery?

I took it for about a month prior once a day, because my fibroid was so huge it was smooshing the daylights out of my colon. I continued to take it for about a month afterwards as well. No ill effects. It's colorless, tasteless, odorless and comes as a powder, so you can tail off it of gradually. Very convenient stuff.
