Ovaries- to keep or not to keep?
I have really been excited about all of the information that I have gotten here. Answers to questions that I didn't even know that I had. I used to work as an office nurse for my doctor and apparently he thinks I should know all there is to know about having a hysterectomy - I don't.
My TAH is scheduled (YEA!!) for 4-9 and the Dr. has left the decision up to me as to whether or not he removes my ovaries. Of course if he gets in there and finds something funky going on with them, out they come. My question is this: If I keep my ovaries will I still have PMS? Does that sound weird? I have the worst PMS ever and I hate what it does to me (and anyone around me). I think I would rather adjust to the whole HRT thing.
24 days until my surgery, I am anxious to get it done, over with, and on to a new way of life. I have bought new night gowns, a small pillow, chapstick, BIG panties, etc.

Ovaries- to keep or not to keep?
Felicia,
In theory you would still have PMS if you kept ovaries. However, in my own experience and that of a couple of friends who kept ovaries, our symptoms have improved tremendously.
I would ask your doctor what his other pateints have experienced and if it's different from what the medical profession "expects" should happen. My doc seemed a bit surprised that my symptoms improved, but I was the first patient who kept ovaries (this was 4 years ago when they always yanked them because "they might as well while they're in there")

Ovaries- to keep or not to keep?
Hi,
I had a tah on 2/28 I kept my ovaries. I am 39yrs old, my Dr left it up to me, but advised that since I am so young I should consider keeping them so I don't have to be on HRT's she doesn't like side effects and my being so young can cause other problems & risks. Research online about them, age and how long you'll be on them matters. When she went in if there was anything wrong with the ovaries she would have taken them, but they were fine. I am only 17 days post op, I haven't so far gotten any PMS symptoms, but it must be better than what I went through the past 6mos. Good Luck with surgery & recovery!

Ovaries to keep or not to keep
I was faced with the same choice - it was up to me. I researched and decided to have them removed. I am 46 years of age. I had been on birth control pills for years and wasn't sure that my own ovaries would kick into production anyway. My surgery was March 1st and I woke up in recovery with the Climara patch. I have had no problems to date and feel very good. At my two week check up I asked my Dr. for the pathology report and apparently I had a cyst on one ovary, some endo and adhesions. I guess the birth control pill had kept these conditions from flaring up. In my case, I have no regrets, but I know this is a very personal decision. Good luck to you.

Ovaries- to keep or not to keep?
i am 48 and had only one ovary remaining from emergency surgery at age 13. DR wanted to take it, but i insisted that if it was OK< keep it.
i had no adhesions or endo, so he left it. unfortunately, i think the shock was too much for it's little system and i'm going into menopause due to the surgery.
it was worth it to me to take the chance that it would work for a few more years. no Hx of ovarian in my family.
