Mirena after myomectomy- experiences?
Hi everyone,
I have my final surgery to remove a large submucosal fibroid on Friday. I'm looking forward to that! Now that all this will be over, I am hoping my sex drive returns and that my sex life with my husband can be normal again. I do not want children (but I did want to keep my uterus- I like it), so I need to be on birth control. The pill can't be my birth control method anymore, because the doctor suspects that the hormones in the pill are what may have caused my fibroid problem to begin with. So, my doctor is recommending that I get a Mirena IUD when I go in for my two week post-op checkup.
My concerns about Mirena:
1. I've read that it can cause additional discharge (not your period, just discharge). I already have a problem with this and don't want it to get worse. I dream of the day when I don't have to wear a pantiliner every day! Any experience with this side effect?
2. I have a canoe trip scheduled for early August, which would be about 2-3 weeks after the Mirena insertion. Is this a bad idea? I don't want to be cramping and/or bleeding while I canoe.
3. I have also read Mirena can cause weight gain. Can anyone confirm or deny this side effect?
Thanks!

Mirena
I just had a myomectomy for a 15 cm fibroid & I got a tubal at the same time. I'm not planning on having children (had been on the pill for years) so I asked my DR. if I could kill 2 birds with one stone. Was this not offered as an option or discussed for you?

I guess I'm not 100% sure I don't want kids.... just know I don't want them right now.

Mirena after myomectomy- experiences?
Oh, I'm sorry, I simply assumed that you were not planning on having children. I just turned 40, so I was ready to move to a more permanent form of birth control method, after years on the pill. I suspect, but have no real proof, that my last birth control pill contributed to the extra large hormone. I certainly wasn't in any of the high risk groups! I should have had the tubal years ago--except that I was too afraid of surgery. Good luck with your second surgery!

Mirena after myomectomy- experiences?
Thank you! I guess my reluctance to do anything permanent speaks to the uncertainty of my choices for the future... I am 35, so I feel like it's still too soon to be forced into a choice one way or the other.

Mirena after myomectomy- experiences?
Mirena helped my sister a bunch. She could no longer take BCP due to some odd neuro problem with migraines and a spinal fluid leak. Her neuro and gyn said Mirena would be safer for her since it mainly goes right to the uterus. Her intro to Mirena was kinda frustrating b/c she spotted for several weeks, but she's glad she stayed with it. Periods hardly even require a panty liner now.
Good luck
Beth

Mirena after myomectomy- experiences?
Lucille: while i wish i could say that the mirena is great - i really don't know. i have very mixed feelings about it. i had one put in 4 mo. ago for an alternative to having surgery b/c i don't have insurance. i am way past due for surgery, but can't seem to get a break in finding help financially for it. so, i stay in pain. the mirena did stop all the cramping. this is the first month i've went w/out bleeding. i would bleed for 3 wks, then off for 1 1/2 - 2 wks before starting again right after i had it put in. but now, so far (knock on wood) - i haven't bled this month at all.
as far as the leakage goes - i have to wear a pad everyday. i can't go w/out. when i think i can go a day w/out, it reminds me very nicely that i can't! it's disgusting.
mine was pretty painful to have put in - i don't want to lie about it. it could be b/c of where the fibroids are inside of me. the big one is up there very close to where the mirena goes in at. if i could've, i would've made him stop. but i knew i needed some sort of relief - if it would work. the pain and cramping stopped after 2 days of the insertion. so, u won't have cramping on ur trip. but, u may very well still be bleeding.
i've had people give me the ups on this thing. after experiencing it first-hand, i just thought it was only fair to let you know my experience. not everything is perfect or great for everyone. my experience was horrible, but now, 4 mo. later, i guess i'm okay w/it other than the constant leakage. that part is nasty. it's not a lot - just enough to have to wear something. it's more aggravating than anything.
hopefully, if something good will happen for me for a change, i'll have surgery w/in a couple of months and i won't have to worry about the mirena at all. i even have a letter from my dr. saying i need surgery as soon as possible! it doesn't matter. there's just no breaks out there.
good luck with yours. i hope all goes well!

Mirena after myomectomy- experiences?
I had a Mirena and I didn't have any cramping at all after an hour past insertion. You should be able to go on your trip. The reason I had it was because of heavy periods with normal cramping and it worked great for a while (about 6 months) then I started bleeding about 25 days out of the month. Well mostly spotting. My BFF had one put in and she doesn't bleed at all exdept to spot occasionally so I guess different people react differently to it.
