I Need to Vent
Hello everyone I am 3 days post op and well when I first got home I was fine pain minimal and I was managing away today the pain hit me like a ton of bricks and OMG I had to take my pain meds which helped me alot, I am alot frustrated because I have a friend who went through the same procedure and she always brags about how she did not need the pain meds when she got home she basically went from the surgery back to life and well me I get tired quickly and after today I need my pain meds. I have been walking as much as I can but after talking to her I began to think something was extremely wrong with me and the procedure I had. I started looking up things about the robotic assisted lap hysterectomy on the internet and all the articles said that recovery is quick and pain minimal -- I posted some of my thoughts on this site and everyone has been great and after talking to my doctor I understand that everyone is different and well just because she did not have pain doesn't mean something is wrong with me because I have pain --- I love this site and don't know what I would be doing without the support I am getting from everyone on here I do love my friend but right now all the bragging she is doing is not helping me anyway thanks for letting me vent

Re: I Need to Vent
I am right there with you. I had a vaginal hysterectomy which I personally thought was going to be a walk in the park. It is definitely not. I wad in tears from the pain at the hospital and at home I need my meds every 4 hrs, and the pain still is pretty intense. Just keep reminding yourself every recovery is different. My doctor said my surgery couldnt of went better, but I am still having a hard time with recovery. Hugs

Re: I Need to Vent
I would just explain to my friend that right now its not what you need to hear. Just like some of us had painful periods, some of us did not. Thats what makes the human body so wondrous, its not exactly the same. Stay on top of your pain meds as if your body is taking the time to combat pain it will not use the time and energy for healing. Take it easy as you only have one chance to heal right. Don't compare yourself to anyone but you. Who knows, she may have done herself damage on the inside by feeling so good and overdoing it. Also, who knows what all the dr did inside of you as compared to her. I had my hysterectomy and adhesion & scar tissue repair which I didn't go in for. You just don't know what the dr finds when they get in there. I appreciated the little aches and pains I had as they were indicators to stop. Even with walking, listen to your body and don't overdo it trying to be like someone else. I was off 7 wks with a DaVinci and my body is so much the better for it. I feel better and I don't feel stressed out like I was before my surgery. Life will be waiting for you and you have the rest of your life but take this time to heal for your mind and body.

Re: I Need to Vent
{{{HUGS}}} tkwatson! is it possible that your friend may not be entirely truthful with you? i have a friend, and she is a great friend don't get me wrong, however, anything i do or have done, she always claims to be better. it drove me a little wacky at first until i realized her home life behind closed doors wasn't as great as she made it out to be. i agree with laineylane that you need to be upfront with her that her recovery and your recovery shouldn't be compared.

It is definitely not a contest as to who can do what first. I think each person has to do what is right for her. I wouldn't compare my progress to hers. I hope you get to feeling well at your own pace.

Re: I Need to Vent
I am 50 and was in excellent shape before my surgery. My coworker is almost 65 and very out of shape and had a similar procedure as me several weeks before me. She told me that she was totally feeling great at 2 weeks, off pain meds and back to normal. So I set my expectations very high.
4 weeks later when I still can't sit upright for more than two hours without swelling and I'm still taking pain medication I feel like something is wrong with me.
My surgery was 6 hours long. Hers was less than 2. Think we're going to heal differently? You bet!! This isn't a contest. Your recovery sounds very familiar to me. Don't race against anyone; heal right the first time.

Re: I Need to Vent
I agree with what everyone has said here. Talk to your friend and let her know that her comparisons aren't helpful to you--in fact, they're hurtful, and right now you need her support! And if she still doesn't stop, perhaps you could limit your time around her until you're feeling better.
The recovery process is a bunch of baby steps. You're only a few days out from your surgery, so you can't expect to be feeling your old self yet. I had a TAH and was on my meds nonstop for two weeks. Other people need them longer, some need them less. We're all different.
Listen to your body, and take the time to heal properly. Remember, doctors say it takes 6 weeks to heal, so even if your friend is superwoman, she wasn't really healed right away. Do what's right for you!

Re: I Need to Vent
Honey , do not be frustrated, every one manages pain in a way different than others , take it easy for the next few weeks, you do not have to prove you are "bionic" , believe me after an adequate interval of time you will be as good as new, take your full chance to be calm and relaxing, and vent with us here as much as you want , we all have been in the same shoes.

Re: I Need to Vent
It's as if I am reading my own situation. I hate that you are going through this cause I know how you feel. Through this entire process I have learned how people can be really insensitive. Today makes 4 weeks since my surgery and I still have new pains off and on. It's like my doctor says, everyone is different and it is just going to take time to heal. Hugs to you!
