Blood sugar problems & surgery
Hi everybody! I just want to say first off how grateful I am to have found this board. It really has been a wonderful source of comfort and information since I learned I was going to be having the operation.
My main concern about surgery is that I have serious hypoglycemia. I say serious because I am on the most limited diet you can think of! I also control my blood sugar by eating every 3 hours - I even have to eat overnight or I don't sleep at all. The idea of being in the hospital and not being able to help myself or eat when I need to, freaks me out. I guess to top everything off my doctor believes the endometroisis may be on my colon (from the exam and my symptoms). I may have to have bowel surgery at the time of my hysterctomy and then I may not be able to eat for days.
I know I will be on a glucose drip, but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions or experience? One of my concerns is that many people in the medical profession do not even see hypoglycemia as a *real* problem so I am afraid I may get neglected or dissed. I can be fairly assertive (she says hoping this is the case when she is wearing jammies and has hair plastered to head) but I just don't know how assertive I will be when drugged up - which is the other issue...I do not handle medications well at all. The only things I take are ibuprofin (for the pain) and herbal supplements. And I have even had a tough time with herbs (my body is very sensitive).
Whew! I am sorry this was so long!
Thanks,
Sue

Blood sugar problems & surgery
Hi Sue
Welcome to Hyster Sisters!!
While I'm sorry that you are facing surgery, I am glad that you found HS and posted to introduce yourself. I don't know much about hypoglycemia, but I did a search on HS and came up with quite a few threads containing the word hypoglycemia:
https://www.hystersisters.com/vb2/sea...der=descending
While you're waiting for someone with personal experience to reply, maybe you'll find some helpful information in one of tose threads.
Be sure that the doctor who treats you for hypoglycemia is aware that you are having surgery, and that he is involved in your hospital care, and perhaps you should ask your DH or other family members to be sure that the nursing staff have been alerted to your condition. You may want to have someone stay with you in the hospital, to act as an advocate, too.
The anesthesiologist is normally involved only in the anesthesia that is given you during surgery - your surgeon is usually the one who prescribes pain meds, so again, be sure that he is aware of your intolerance to pain meds ahead of time.
Please be sure to read the Pre-Op Hints and the Post-Op Hints. They are full of great advice that will help you to prepare for your surgery and recovery.
Also, don’t forget to go back into your control panel and add your surgery date to your profile so you'll be on the calendar and will receive a special greeting from Hyster Sisters.
I hope you'll continue to read and to post any questions that you may have - we'll do our best to help.

Definitely have the doctor that diagnosed you as hypoglycemic talk with your surgeon. I have Type 1 diabetes and my doctors are coming up with a plan to keep my sugars monitored. Do you have your own glucose meter? If you do take it with you to the hospital and have someone you know check your sugar if the nurses will not do it. I've had experiences in the hospital that the nurses will absolutely only do it when the doctor orders it (like every 6 hours) and as you know low blood sugar can happen anytime.

Thanks Karen and Coral!
I didn't realize you could do a detailed search, Karen. I appreciate it.
My husband will be with me and he knows how to check my blood sugar. I told him he can do it while I am sleeping if need be! And yeah, geesh, 6 hours is waaaaaay too long between blood tests.
Thanks again!
Sue

Blood sugar problems & surgery
Hi...I had TVH 5 weeks ago and I have problems with blood sugar too. I found the phrase that seemed to make sense to the anethetist was 'easily hypoglaecemic' so I used that to everyone else and it worked.
Was on a saline/glucose drip anyway and took care to get my carbos, so I didn't have a problem. May be worth keeping your little store with you just in case though.

Hi Sriv,
Thanks for replying!
When you say you took care of your carbs and I should keep my store with me, do you mean I should have food with me? I didn't think I would be able to eat...if I can, that's great.
