Major Complications

I haven't been on the site since just after my VH on 16 March. Reason being that within 4 days I was back in hospital with major pain and fever. I was placed on 3 types of IV antibiotics and very heavy painkillers. After 3 days in I was getting worse so doc's went back in vaginally to try to clear out an infected heamotoma that had resulted from original op. After another 4 days they sent me home.

Within 4 hours of returning home I was back at emergency with life threatening symptoms. I can't tell you how bad the pain was. They readmitted me and after another couple if days of major nausea, fevers, rounds of medical tests they found that the original infection had spread to my chest cavity around my lung and liver. So in for a laproscopic clean out. Woke up in intensive care with several drains hanging out of me and both lungs collapsed which developed into pneumonia. Had to have one lung drained by two huge needles and having the stomach drains removed had me screaming the hospital down.

All in all I spent 23 nights in hospital and had 3 major operations. All for the sake if a 'simple' vaginal hysterectomy. You never think the complications might happen to you but they can as it turns out. I was a happy, healthy 42 year old woman.

I have been home now for a week. Still very week with some ongoing lung and abdominal pain but gradually improving. I think the psychological trauma has been most damaging but am thankful for my family and God's support.

I'm sorry this is so long but knowledge is power and women should be aware if very real complications of surgery.

Cheers,
Aussie Sister

Re: Major Complications

So sorry that you have had to endure these complications. My family could not understand why I was so fearful to have the surgery I knew I needed. I realzed the potential complications. Fortunately, I came thru w/ no problems so far but it seems there are not many you haven't experienced. Gentle hugs and prayers coming your way.
