Surgery tomorrow, I have a question

Hi, everyone. I have a question. Tomorrow morning I am having TAH BSO for very heavy, prolonged bleeding with lots of clots, very painful periods. Up to this point I have tried several years of different hormone combos to control bleeding with no luck. I have had an ultrasound in Jan. (transvaginal) that showed nothing, and a D&C and hysterscope in Feb. which also showed nothing, pathology report was negative. My questions is has anyone else had these problems where no cause could be found or is it possible for them to find something that is causing the problems when they get in there for the surgery even if nothing showed up on these other tests? Or if nothing showed up in everything that has been done so far it is safe to assume that my problems are just hormonal? Thanks

well, maybe...

I've had these same issues.

Finally, they said it was adenomyosis (which can be microscopic) on top of our friend endo. Adeno isn't always caught by biopsies because it can be hit or miss. It doesn't show up on ultrasound in some cases (like mine), but the symptoms are still there.

I'm waiting for my pathology report, personally. Either way, I'm going to be glad it's OVER!!!

Surgery tomorrow, I have a question

Hi My Sister,
Im 2 weeks post op and I had some tests come back negative as well before my surgery. When I was having an intervaginal ultra sound, the tech told me that endo will not show up on the ultra sound. She said if it does its usually in older women who have had it for a very long time.
During my hyst they found endo on my kidneys, bladder, and colon which never showed up in anything. Just let me say that the minute I woke up from surgery, I could instantly tell a difference in how my abdomen felt. I can only imagine how much better it will be when Im fully recovered!
My prayers will be with you tomorrow. You will officially be a

Surgery tomorrow, I have a question

Same here.....all my tests have been "negative", even the lap that was looking for endo.....my doc says this.....either is is microscopic endo, which is deep in the tissue, and not able to be seen even when operating, or adenomyosis, which generally is not diagnosed definatively until after the uterus is removed, when they slice it into cross sections and examine the tissue for evidence of the adeno (I suppose a lucky biopsy could catch it, as well as having positive clinical signs which make the diagnosis very likely). She feels adeno is likely in my case, and still feels endo is possible, even though she did not find any 3 years ago in my lap. If nothing else, if figure I won't have the heavy bleeding anymore, and both my doc and the pelvic pain specialist give me pretty good odds of getting rid of the pain.

Good luck to you!

How Odd?

I had the same bleeding and cramping problems for four years since a D&C and Laporascope for Adhesions, other than the fact that it was very annoying, I didn't have to take a towel with me everywhere I went. In Oct 2001, I noticed that I was getting worse, and I would just flood unexpectedly. Finally, in Jan 2002, I went back to my Gyn, he said that my uterus felt big, and he did a vaginal U/S. He saw a polyp and couldn't see much of anything else. So another D&C and Laporascope was scheduled in Feb. It turned out that I had a few polyps in the uterus, a fybroid cyst on and behind the uterus, and endometriosis on both ovaries. He took and zapped the endo with laser and took the polyp and fybroid out. Two weeks post-op, Aunt Flo pays me a visit and I am in more pain than ever but I figure I am still healing internally and the period is just adding to the problem. Six weeks post-op, Aunt Flo visits again, I have more pain than every, and I am bleeding more than ever. Of course, I am very unhappy because I wasn't suppose to have these problems anymore!!! LOL Coincidently, I have my 6 week post-op appt the same day I am flooding like crazy. Dr. does an exam and tells me that my uterus is much bigger than 6 weeks before. He said that it was Adenomyosis.

I felt like sharing my story as well, because I thought that maybe I was alone here, because my biopsy also came back negative.

I wish you many blessing on your way to becoming a !!!

Surgery tomorrow, I have a question

Add me to the case of nothing showing on the tests. I have had abnormal bleeding for 4 yrs now. I do not bleed very heavy, but almost all the time. for the most part I have not had much pain. Just bleeding all the time!!!

I had a Laproscopic gall bladder surgery last August and because of all the fluid I had in my abdomen they did a complete laproscopic exploratory and found cyst on both ovaries that had not show up (or were not there) on the ultrasound several months before. Then about 6 wks later the cysts grew and started to rupture. But still no cause for the bleeding.

So, I am going to be glad to get the bleeding over with and hope that they can give me a reason for it. But if not, at least I won't be bleeding all the time. I sometimes wonder if I am having this surgery just because I am going through menopause and my hormones are messed up. But we have tried hormones to stop the bleeding without success. So, after 4 yrs, it is time to get it over with. And get rid of the ovarian cysts too!!
