Pre-Op Jitters

Hello dear "sisters":

I found this website as a link from the endometrial ablation website. I am scheduled for a TAH July 1st. I am 43, single no children.

I began having menstral problems at age 15 - been to numerous docs, 2 D&C's, 1 ablation, pills coming out my ears, injections and even one doc wanted to operate on my pituitary when I was a teenager! Most of the docs agreed the problem was hormonal and not structural.

Until this year, no doc wanted to do a hyster because they felt I could still marry and have kids. I had an ablation last August (ThermaChoice) and didn't bleed for four months. In December, I started bleeding again and other than the month of Feb., I have continued to bleed. After mtg. with the doc this week, I said "if I were your wife, what would you recommend?" He said "a hysterectomy".

So..here I am. I am nervous and jittery, but am anxious to get it over with. Everyone I have talked to has said "you will feel so much better."

The plan is to remove the uterus and cervix and keep the ovaries. If they don't look normal, he will remove them.

Question: Is it possible that my recent incontinence is related to my bleeding history and pattern?

Thank you so much for this website. I could cry when I read so much of the support you're all giving!

WELCOME!

Hi Jeryl,

I am very glad I had my hysterectomy. My surgery was 4-22-2001. I feel great! I had a prolapsed retro unterus with a large fibroid. It totally affected my bowels and lower back. I didn't have a problem with incontinence. But I think I have read about that in the message boards.

I just feel much better--all the way around! I feel like my hormones have balanced a little also. Mabybe due to the fact things are calmer and much less painful. I was able to keep both my ovaries as they looked fine.

They did mine vaginally and I am sure this has helped with my recovery. I have been having to slow down and take it easy! I want to go prepare the garden beds, paint the bathroom, and everywhere I turn I am having these creative urges..... I really need to watch myself and easy does it. I think I really need the break from the stress in my life. The hardest part for me was waiting for surgery.

Wishing you a wonderful day,

Ingrid

Pre-op jitters - Fear not!

I am 37 and it's been almost a year since my TAH. I'm married, but have no children.

My uterus and I grew a 2-lb. fibroid tumor. It caused back pain (which improved dramatically with exercise) and the pressure on my bowels left me constipated most of the time. Yikes! Fortunately I never experienced the horrible bleeding so many ladies suffer from. At my annual exam my gynecologist said she wasn't willing to ignore my tumor anymore and referred me to a surgeon for a consultation. That was on Thursday. On Monday, I reported to the local hospital for surgery.

My positive surgery/recovery experience is attributed to being at peace with my decision (having only three days to be anxious helped too!), being physically fit, and having excellent support post-op from friends, sister, and husband.

My advice: If you're not already, get yourself in shape. You've got plenty of time to prepare for your recovery.

Hopefully you've got upbeat family and/or friends nearby who will come over, make you lunch and vacuum! Think positive thoughts...soon you'll be on your way to a wonderful new chapter of your life.

Peace,
LisaAnnette
