Just wanted to know for those of you that have had your surgeries should I expect to be depressed afterward? Ive come to terms with my upcoming lost of fertility but Im wondering if Im going to go through a period of depression after its done. Is it common for this to happen? I just want to prepre myself as best that I can if it possible.

After Hysterectomy?
Hi,
I keep recommending this book to everyone: The Essential Guide to Hysterectomy... https://www.hystersisters.com/vb2/sho...96#post1119396
It contains information about post-op depression.
If you have any worries, it may help to discuss it with your doctor ahead of time... so you'll both be ready if it happens.
I waited a very long time before deciding on surgery. I was totally confident and comfortable by the time I went to the hospital. And I have had an easy recovery, with no complications and I feel very good mentally and physically! I hope you will too!!
Best Wishes!!

After Hysterectomy?
Hi, I am unable to take any hormones due to blood clot history. I am only 2 wk post op and have had no symptons of menapause as of this date. However, definitely discuss this with your doctor and what options are out there. Many sisters here referred me to foods that are high in estrogen.

After Hysterectomy?
Torry -
Depressed I don't know but I was very emmmm not sure what to call it. But it consisted of watching TV and then something setting off the tears, and sometimes it wasn't what would usually make me cry.
That was it, I think it helped that I had someone who could get me out of the house several times a week to do something small (45 minutes to an hour).
And it passed after about the 3rd week.

After Hysterectomy?
Julie, that seems to be what I'm going through- although I went through several emotional upheavals very close to my surgery, so I'm not sure which end is up re: cause of my tears. I lost my mom 2 weeks before surgery (I was with her in CA), flew home to MO for about 4 days, flew back to CA to help dad for 4 more days, then flew back home and had surgery about a day and a half later. PLUS, husband in retail in high-stress pre-holiday period, financial worries, and I received a notice that the state of Missouri is requiring me to take 19 UNITS in order to grant me a teacher's license in this state (I've taught in 3 other states). YIKES!
Anyhoo, I do take heart that, while some of my emotions are necessary grieving/stress relief, the surgery-based ones may even out in a few weeks. Thanks for giving me that hope, Julie!

After Hysterectomy?
I finally had my hyster this year after enduring a RSO, endo removal, D&C last year.....it should have been done last year but long story short, the doctor wouldnt do it. Better doctor this time, all problems addressed, done!
As far as depression, a lot I think has to do with mental attitude and how well you recover. I thought that all things considered mentally I was doing well until this week. I have been a raving b for the last several days and am ready to crawl out of my skin. Not sobbing depression but not good. I think it has just gotten to where after a month, this recuperating is wearing on me. My case is not typical so please don't panic!
The regular crying jags, I fortunately had a cousin who is involved in medicine tell me last year to be prepared for the jags. Anesthesia absolutely can wreak havoc on some of us. In her case, every day for 4 MONTHS she cried at 3PM. Didn't matter where she was, what she was doing, tired/rested, made no difference. It stopped on its own eventually. If she hadn't told me that, I would have thought that I needed professional help with the jags. Even two months later I was sobbing (sobbing!!!) at the warm fuzzy Christmas commercials! I got to where I would just laugh at myself and say my eyes were leaking and I needed new faucets.
I honestly think the best thing to do is approach it as we did. We are not anyone special, DH and I, but we love each other and trust each other very much. I told him that if HE thought things had crossed a line that he needed to set me down and tell me that it was time for some intervention. You have to have someone you trust implicitly and that you know would never harm you in order to do that and I am grateful I did. I knew he could recognize changes that were very unhealthy in me that I might not be able to see. Who else knows you better, right?

After Hysterectomy?
Hey Selena...its so nice to see a neighbor around here. It sure is a small world...I work in Gary.
To answer your question, there was a tearful sense relief after surgery and a sense of closure. I came to terms with my infertility in the late 80s so that wasn't an issue for me, thank God. I'm not sure I'd call what I experienced "depression".
I do feel depressed/frustrated some days because I am dependent on people for transportation and some tasks around my condo...but thats about it.
Good luck to you...drop me a line sometime!

After Hysterectomy?
I was worried about depression afterwards too, but mostly because I was depressed before surgery. I wasn't emotional about surgery itself though. I was taking zoloft prior to surgery, but wasn't very good about taking it...and now I haven't taken it in awhile, but I haven't noticed any worse feelings since surgery. But that's me, I think it just depends on the person. I also kept my ovaries though, so as far as chemicals go..I may be in the clear from that aspect.

After Hysterectomy?
I have read that if you are depressed before surgey then it is likely you will be depressed after and if you were not depressed before then it is unlikely you will be after. A blanket statement I know but also I think that if you are as sure as you can be that you do not have any alternative to this surgery then that helps you to come to terms with it after. I thought i would mourn the loss of my uterus but I actually did that before the surgery. I have been waiting for it to 'hit me' since the surgery and so far it hasn't. I have even tried to make it happen by sitting and thinking about it to try and get it over and done with but all I feel is relief that I will never have to endure another period. I think it is much harder if you haven't had children and wanted them or if you are young but the main emotion I have felt is one of 'relief that it is over'
I can relate to the welling up over silly commercials though but that just makes me laugh at myself through the tears. Not depression just a bit girly.
