when did your hrt start

Hi all
for those of you that had your ovaries removed along with everything else , how long after surgery did you have to wait to start on hrt i had my surgery on monday and was told by my gynae that i had to be 6 weeks post op before i started on hrt due to there being a risk of blood clots that can happen after surgery, when i was being discharged by the nurse i mentioned this to her and she said that there is no definate evidence that blood clots do happen with hrt straight after surgery but it is better to be on the safe side, which i do agree with, its just that i have read some of you had a hrt patch on when you woke up from surgery and started on it straight away. As for now i dont feel like im in menapause, except i have woke up in the middle of the night with a wet neck and hair but thats all. Thanks IM 37

Hey liteshade! That's the first I've heard about hrt right after surgery possibly causing blood clots, that's very interesting. Makes me glad I chose to forego the estrogen patch the doctor wanted to give me day after surgery. I figured a few weeks without hormones wouldn't kill me, and I plan to do research on the subject before I go on anything, if anything. Like you, I've had some brief heat spells, but if that's as bad as it gets then it's very manageable. I think both of us may have done the right thing by not rushing into anything, we'll see! :-)

Some of the adverse side effects of HRT are blood clots, stroke, headache etc.. Yes, it can occur, but the risks are low.

I am currently on Climara. Even though I kept the only ovary I had since my left one was removed a few years ago. The remaining one is not working very well. Getting hot flashes & major insomnia. So just started on Climara on Thursday, hoping I get some sleep tonight, if not he is increasing my dose Monday. I cannot stand being sleep deprived & hot all day. Take care.

I had both ovaries and tubes removed on 7-23-07 and my

doctor didnt want me to start HRT right after surgery

because he said if I got a blood clot he wouldnt know if it

was from HRT or the surgery. So he gives it to you at your

6 week checkup if you need it.

I had a TAH with BSO on 8/3. She started my Estrace on my second post-op day.

I've had temperature fluctuations, but not a real hot flash.

My doctor gave me a prescription for Climara but didn't want me to start taking it until I got my first hot flash. She said I would start having them about 2 weeks after the surgery. I'm at 7 weeks now and still have not gotten one hot flash (I'm definitely not complaining!).

My doctor did put me on Vagifem at my 6 week appointment just so I don't dry up too much. I'm taking that along with a multi-vitamine and calcium.

I had a TAH/BSO and I awoke in the recovery room with a HRT patch on. My physician felt the benefits of starting on the patch immediately far outweighed the small risk of HRT side effects such as blood clots, ect. I have not experienced a single menopausal symptom since having my hysterectomy and starting on HRT. I am glad that I started on it immediately.

Hey everyone-
I had my surgery 6-15 (TAH/BSO) and was given HRT's the following moning after surgery. However, I had a large growth which had encased both ovaries and prevented me from getting ANY natural hormones for about the last 6 months. I think my DH is relieved I am not that crazy and there is emtional relief.

I had not heard anything about the blod clots nor was I warned other then general information with the meds. I still have some hot falshes but the insomnia is the worst.

I was started on a Estraderm patch the morning after my surgery. I'm on Estrogen only. I started having hot flashes about 10 days post op. They aren't bad. It was triple digit outside anyways and I couldn't tell if it was hot flash or hot outside. I wake up about 5 am sometimes having a hot flash, and I have one if I get stressed about something. If this is how bad it will get for me I'm not going to complain.
