Re: Feel like a dummy for asking this but I'm paranoid

I had that "stalling" problem around days 5-6 post op. It made me miserable and quite uncomfortable! What i did was to send my mom to the pharmacy and she talked with the pharmacist there. She gave my mom glycerin suppositories. She said they dont build dependency. She also recommended that i take twice the amount of stoll softeners that i was taking. That unstalled what was stuck there and i didnt have to push at all "phew". I had to use them for a couple days and now im fine, i dont need them anymore. I still have spasms though but at least the stuff that has to come out, goes out now lol

Never are there any dumb questions! I had a professor that used to say the only dumb question was the one never asked!

Re: Feel like a dummy for asking this but I'm paranoid

I have had to take more than the normal dose too. The bottle said 1-3 per day and I take 6. 3 in the am and 3 before bed. Things run much more smoothly and if things back up I take some Miralax in a fruit smoothie.

My first BM was out of a horror story. I thought I was going to die a terrible death while pooing. I had flashes of what my tombstone would read and it wasn't pretty.

Re: Feel like a dummy for asking this but I'm paranoid

I was told that if I didn't pass gas, I could not go home so I did a lot of walking. When I felt the gas down below, "I held on to my belly and gave a little push. If it didn't come come with a little pressure, I stopped and tried when I had the feeling again. The gas finally came out and then after that I had to make sure I was on the toilet for any more gas because I had BM with each gas pressure. When I got home the gas was very painful but I would bend my knees slight and roll a little to the side and held on to my belly and with the slightest push was able to expel it. As for BM I have no trouble, I have Chrons Diease which means I always have loose stools which is a problem in itself. I hope this wasn't TMI.

Lol @ Jazzy! I love this site. I thought I was the only one who read all the hygiene products in the bathroom! fortunately for me all I do is poop about 2 to 3 times a day but before my SAH/BSO I would go days without going as I always seemed to battle constipation. That's seems to be gone now.

BUT when is it ok to help it along a little bit without busting myself wide open??? I am seriously in termoil over this and for the first time in months have to belly laugh at myself and wow that hurts LOL!!!! It would really help to be able to give a little push but I was never told when I could and I am not trying to injure myself!! HA ok I did it I asked I feel better now!
Lilgozz:

I see you had a DaVinci like me. If they took the cervix, then you have a small upper vaginal incision and 4-5 1/2" incisions plus that pesky upper left one that is probably about an inch long and is the sorest.

You had your procedure 2 days after mine. If you feel you still need help,. take the stool softeners and drink lots of water. I read through a lot of the suggestions, including putting your feet up on a stool (excellent one). Gravity will eventually work. I've had to strain just a tad (nothing major) and what has resulted is a bit more spotting -- but no innards bursting though.

The main reason that you don't want to strain is that you don't want to stress the internal stitches, especially the vaginal cuff. I believe the docs are overly cautious, and rightly so. I'm not allowed to use the stationary bike for the same reason. Even though your external incisions are healed, you are still healing on the inside. A few days of colace should have everything moving as it should.

Re: Feel like a dummy for asking this but I'm paranoid

lilgozz.... we feel your pain, literally! We've all been there and I wish I could tell you it gets better soon, but I'd be lying! Your digestive system is going to be on the fritz for awhile, sweets!

Best solution I've found are probiotics. If you live in the US, there's this wonderful daily supplement called Align. It takes a couple weeks to regulate you, but it works wonders! Sometimes too good!

Hang in there and ask away. Not much seems to embarrass us! Heck, I almost went to the ER last week for gas pains and asked everyone else if they had this problem! Just ask, we're not shy! And, we're all willing to give you advise and hear what works for you!

Re: Feel like a dummy for asking this but I'm paranoid

lol, this made me realize that, as a kid, I was ALWAYS reading the shampoo bottles and such in the bathroom! I'd forgotten about that. I always - even b4 last week's surgery - take in my little radio (NPR!) and a book. I've been lucky in this regard (since surgery). 1st day - had my dark roast coffee and ta da!

Ok, putting your feet on a stool??? I'm still trying to wrap my mind around that visual! I think I'd fall off!
But hey --- if using a stool for a stool does the trick ...

A footstool! A footstool! It puts your butt even with your feet -- sort of like squatting, which helps the gravity. When I've been constipated in the past, I've put my feet on the edge of the bathtub, which often works. Less need to strain. Generally, you shouldn't be able to fall off, the toilet should be wide enough to give stability.
