Hyster went great, Prometium questions?

Hello Princesses,

I had my uterus only hysterectomy last February and I'm doing well. However, I am on oral Prometrium everyday originally to help with the bleeding, but also the migranes. (FYI: I'm not going throught menopause yet) After surgery, my DR (not surgeon) said I should stay on the Probetrium. I have over achiving estrogen levels aparently and this will event things out. It works, no headaches, and I sleep great, too.

Here are my questions:

I can't seem to find much as far as what longterm side effects might be an issue, any info?

Also, sex drive is a bit low, is this because of the surgery? or could it be the Prometrium?

Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks,

I've been taking Prometrium for over 2 and a half years. I did a lot of research before taking it, and it is one of the best bio-identical progesterones. Because it isn't a synthetic progesterone, it works like the progesterone you produce in your body; and likewise your body processes it easily. (Synthetic progestins are harder for the body to break down, last longer in the body, etc. I know synthetic progestins can have long term side-effects.)

Because of your question, I did a bit of digging and even went to read the pharmaceutical company's insert. I could not find any information about long-term effects. The closest thing I could find to anything was in a book by Dr. John Lee. Compared to a progesterone cream, the dosage of progesterone in Prometrium is much higher because a majority of the dose is metabolized by the liver. Dr. Lee's concern is that the higher dose could desensitize the estrogen and progesterone receptors. If this is concerning, talk to your doctor.

Personally, I have not experienced a lower libido while on it. It might be the surgery because it is a shock to remove organs (even if we cursed them). It takes awhile for everything to adjust, including sex drive. If everything (emotional health, lifestyle, foods, etc) is the same as prior to taking the Prometrium, you may want to talk to your doctor about whether it could be the cause. In the past, I've had a couple of things cause low/lower libido including antidepressants, post-surgical depression, and insomnia.

If you want to do more research on Prometrium, go visit your pharmacist and ask to borrow their "Facts and Figures" book. It lists every bloody side-effect anyone in any of the clinical trials experienced. I love reading it just because I am a total nerd and also because I've proven myself right when noticing a problem or side-effect that the doctor says "I've never heard of that" or "I don't know..."

I don't know if this is very helpful, but I hope it is.
