Should I demand labs?
I am 3-1/2 weeks PO and have had several minor issues. I have made 3 unscheduled visits to my OB and then when things still didn't seem right went to my Primary Dr. My OB did Urinalysis on my 1st visit at 5 days and said I had UTI and put me on antibiotics, called with UA report and put me on second round of antibiotics, went in 2nd time at 1-1/2 wks and she did minor exam but did not redo UA, went in at 2-1/2 wks and she just talked to me and put me on a 3rd round of anti for 1mth. Still having problems and feel like something not right so went to my Primary physician (actually saw Nurse Praticioner). She consulted with the OB at their facility and they were going to catheterize me and fill my bladder with fluid to see how much I could pass. After futher discussion they decided not to and decided to send me to a Urologist. They are concerned that the bladder is not in the proper position or that it accidently got stitched. They did redo the UA and said it looked ok, gave me Naproxin and something for bladder spasms. Got a call today and was told that the UA culture was negative. I generally try not to bother my doctors but I am telling you, something is not right. I was expecting to have discomfort and some fatigue, especially given my medical issues but good lord. I am now 3-1/2 wks post op and am having pains that put me in the fetal position. If I do anything other than stay in bed most of the day, I am so fatigues that I sleep the entire day the next day. I have been out of bed 1 time today to go to the bathroom (which is attached to my room) and ended up having to lay down on the bathroom floor before I could sit on the comode.
I have seen the posts that say we will take 1 step forward and 2 steps back but I feel like I am taking 1/2 step forward and 3 steps back. I am just not accustomed to anything controlling my life like this recovery has.
Question is, Is this normal and I am just being overly concerned, has my body just finally given up from having to be so strong for the past 8+ years, or is it possible that there is something really wrong? Should I demand that they do lab work to check my Blood counts, to check for infection other than what shows up in Urinalysis, hormone function, etc?
When I talked to my DBF earlier this evening, he kept trying to reassure me that I am healing and it will take time and told me to hang in there. I came so close to telling him the only type of hanging I was contemplating was from a rope.
Thanks for letting me vent....I am still at my wits end.

Hmmm....my experience is that if you feel that strongly that something is not right, then it is probably a valid feeling. Keep pushing. If one doc doesn't listen, then find one that will. Good luck.

Should I demand labs?
At 3 1/2 weeks, I was feeling pretty well, able to drive, walk and be up for most of the day and was only taking Aleve for pain. I had a UTI that took a couple rounds of antibiotics to clear up but was started on pyridium with the first round and had no further pain with that end of things. The bladder pain was by far the worst pain in my recovery though. At that point, I was still easily fatigued and sometimes had to take several naps depending on what I was doing. The fatigue persisted to about week 8 for me, and my doc said it and the swelly belly were usually the biggest complaints and the last to go. With the pain you're describing, something definitly doesn't sound right. If the new meds don't help, I think you should see the urologist to make sure everything is ok on that front and go from there. The bladder is full of nerve endings and it may still be inflammed from the surgery and infections. Hopefully the Naproxen and anti-spasmotics will help. Best of luck to you and hope you are feeling better soon.

Thank you for your responses. I have an appointment with the Urologist tomorrow afternoon so we will see how that goes.

GrumpyBear:
I am so sorry you are experiencing such pain. The bladder pain was also the worst part of my recovery, but I have a chronic bladder condition that really added to the "normal" bladder pain post-op.
I think the Urologist is your best bet for help. What you are experiencing is not "normal." My prayers are with you for your appt. tomorrow, and I hope the answer is somthing simple that a Uro would know that is just not familiar to a GP or NP. Keep us posted on your progress.

Should I demand labs?

Am glad that you are seeing a doc soon. Pain that puts you in a fetal position is not what you should be expecting, or feeling. Shall hope your diagnosis is swift, so that treatment can be started. If not, getting another opinion would be in order. Sounds like you are doing a good job of listening to your body.
I noticed you've needed to take quite a few antibiotics. Long story, but I found out.....the hard way.....that repeated antibiotic use can cause some severe....but easily preventable .....problems, especially when our bodies and immune systems are so vulnerable postop. You can prevent bacterial/yeast imbalance problems by picking up some refrigerated acidophyllis capsules at your pharmacy, to take at bedtime. No prescription is needed, but it is always prudent to run such things past your doc.
Hope you find resolution soon, as well as preventing any side effects from your prescribed antibiotics. Take care, Princess............ s.....Deb

Should I demand labs?
Grumpybear,
I feel for your pain. I can tell ya that even though we have some great doctors, not ALL doctors are created equally when it comes to surgery. Some doctors are outstanding surgeons however they are rough with our organs when doing surgery. If a doctor is rough throughout surgery, the recovery can be more painful for the patient vs. a doctor that is gentle. Why they differ this way is beyond me. Maybe some of them are so good at doing the surgery its like they can perform it with their eyes closed and get right to it and dont handle our inners gently. My brother works in the hosp and says he can always tell which doctors do surgeries based on the recovery with some patients. He said many of them are excellent surgeons, however... they are rough with their patients during surgery.
I hope you get the answers you need to get some relief, that is horrible you have to feel that way this long after surgery.... I would for sure get lots of rest and not be doing anything for a few days and get to that appt and demand that something is wrong..... and that they need to figure out what it is!
Good luck and many hugs,
Lily
