weight gain with iron pills
I was diagnosed in July as highly Anemic. I have been on Proferrin 3 times a day since. I have noticed a steady weight gain since starting the iron pills. and its all collecting around my belly, my butt and upper thighs... its nasty!!!!! I am a weight watchers life time member and I know I've slipped off the wagon the last 6 months due to the emotional roller coaster I've been on due to my anemia. I'm guessing I've put on at least 15lbs. I'm hoping I will shed a few after surgery... I've also been on the birth control pill since I was 16...I'm now 44 ( no breaks...no babies) so this is not only my last period coming up next week but my last pack of bcps!!!! im hoping going off the pill will help me loose a few as well! fingers crossed. I'm having my TAH on Feb 24th.... stay tuned.........
can anyone else weigh in (lol) on this topic ...just wondering if others have experienced this with iron pills too?

Re: weight gain with iron pills
I found out I was severely anemic in September and I had been having symptoms of anemia for about 4 years but I was misdiagnosed. Over those years I had steadily gained weight and no matter what I did I had a terrible time losing it. The day I started taking Iron(ferrous sulfate liquid) I started dropping pounds. I was amazed because I had struggled for so long with weight and I was trying so hard(and had no idea I was anemic). Apparently not having enough iron slows metabolism down. From what I have read that is odd that you are gaining weight after taking iron. I know some people lose weight who are anemic and some gain it so maybe taking iron can go either way. I'm not sure. It might be just the stress of what you have been through the last 6 months. The hell I went through the last 4 years probably also added to my weight gain, I just was so worried and depressed about all my health issues.

Re: weight gain with iron pills
I've been anemic since I gave birth to my daughter 14 years ago. All of the excess bleeding over the last year definitely didn't help. I never seemed to be able to tolerate taking iron pills. I too noticed that my metabolism shut down. One of the nurses at the hospital told me to buy boxes of raisins because that was a good source of iron. I make sure to eat my raisins every day. I'm hopeful that once I have recovered from the surgery, I will see a change with the anemia. I also started drinking an 8 oz. glass of Soy milk daily which is iron rich also. (I kept one ovary and it is supposed to help regulate your hormones). I would love to see some weight change, but I will be patient!
Best wishes!

Re: weight gain with iron pills
I would love to be able to blame the iron pills! I've gained 10 lbs since starting them, but really I know the blame belongs to all the unhealthy (but delicious) holiday food.
It is so much harder to take the weight off. I am a lifetime WW member too (as long as they don't see how much I weigh now, I think I've disqualified myself!), but I just don't feel up to counting points. I'd maintained for a couple years and after all the holiday pig-out was over, I've tried really hard to at least stick to my old eating habits.
Its working for stopping the gain, but no loss yet.
I bought a Fit Bit Zip (like the WW ActiveLink) and that has been motivating me to get my exercise level up.
