Surgery July 1

Hello. My name is Sue. I am scheduled for a hysterectomy on July 1 due to fibroids and heavy bleeding. Hopefully it will be LSH. Will know for sure next Wednesday when I go back to DR for pre-op appt. I would really appreciate any tips on what to expect after surgery, pain level, exactly what I will and won't be able to do, any advice on how to best prepare for surgery. I know I can ask my DR, but really feel best advice comes from someone who has been through this procedure. Thanks!!

Re: Surgery July 1

Well, I had a TAH. The Dr. said the fibroids were too big to deal with in a lap. My surgery was fast and I was in the recovery room for a while. When I first woke up, the pain wasn't too bad, but it felt like bad menstrual cramps. They gave me drugs until the pain was better and then put me into my room with a morphine pump.

Pain was pretty manageable. Even after getting out of the hospital, I really only feel like it's a muscle ache. The ONLY thing that hurts is sneezing, and it really f'ing hurts. I've been taking Ibuprofen for the past week.

I'm 11 day post-op and I feel good, but I went grocery shopping yesterday and I honestly can say I dont' want to lift anything heavier than a gallon of milk. If there's stuff you use a lot in the fridge that is on the bottom shelf, have it moved to the top before your surgery, especially if it's even remotely heavy.

If you have an LSH, there's a good chance you'll be cleared for sexual activity within 2-3 weeks if all heals normally.

You WILL get tired easily. Try not to overdo it, it's hard sometimes, but all the little things you do will add up throughout the day and wear you out.
