Hyst. without trying other options? Please help
Hello all. My GYN is very good and many people rave about him and how he saved their lives. I went to see him about a year ago with pain on my lower left side and heavy painful periods. He did a vaginal ultrasound and said I have a small fibroid and my left ovary is adhered to my uterus. I told him I was not yet in enough pain or discomfort to consider treatments and he said I could come back if that changed. Well it has changed. I am in daily pain and my periods are getting worse and more painful. I went back in and he examined me again and studied my chart. He asked me many questions and seemed to really want to know everything and truly understand. Then he said he thinks my best option is a Laproscopic supracervical hyst. He said he would leave my cervix and hopefully both ovaries but that my left one may be too damaged by adhesions. He suggested this first before any other form of treatment. I have never tried anything else but from what I've read, Other treatments do not last and most end up with a hyst. anyway. I am confused frustrated and in pain. Are other treatments worth trying? I am tempted to just get the hyst. but then sites such as the HERS foundation scare the crap out of me and have me think twice. I just don't know what to do. Please help!

Re: Hyst. without trying other options? Please help
I'd suggest a 2nd opinion. If you hear the same, that will be something, but if there are options best to know so you can decide ahead if it's worth trying. Personally I had no surgical complications but they sometimes happen and ifyou had a problem but didn't know you had options until afterwards, it could lead to regrets. I don't find some online scare stuff too helpful, since it really seems there are just not good alternatives to surgery in many cases. But I think more opinions and more info help make an informed and confident choice. Whatever you decide, I hope it works out for the best.

Re: Hyst. without trying other options? Please help
I agree with having a 2nd opinion. I did. I had a male GYN and he didn't offer other options, he simply said do the hysterectomy. I went to a female GYN and she sat with me, was very, very patient and went over at least 6 alternatives with me. She explained each one pro vs. con and in the end I could see on paper why nothing else would work and at my age of 47, since I wasn't planning on having chldren, I was able to see why the partial hysterecomy was now the only option. Sometimes it's the presentation given by the Dr. I've found that Drs who are patient in explaining things to you and treat you as their only patient are usually the ones you want to treat you. The 2nd opinion Dr was a Godsend and she is the reason I made my decision. So I think a 2nd opinion is crucial. You have to be at peace with your decision either way. That's what's important.
Best wishes to you.

I would deff get another opinion! I didnt have any luck with any other kids of treatment, and I didnt have a bad experience and so far have had no complications. Also, you can ask your dr what he thinks might be behind all of your iossues, and that might help make the choice a little easier

Re: Hyst. without trying other options? Please help
I tried the ablation first and it might have help shorten the duration of my periods but did nothing for the pain.I have three small fibroids and am getting the LAvH on tuesday.I did not get a second opinion although I know what all the other options are and just decided to go with this one.My doctor said i could do nothing at all If I choose to keep living with it.One thing I have done to get unbiased opinions about hysterectomy. When on Facebook in search box type in hysterectomy, when the drop down menu comes up showing the pages choose the one that says interest...when you get there look on the left hand side at related posts.Anyone on Facebook who does not have their facebook page set to private who has mentioned hysterectomy in a post will come up and then others comment on it...all the post I have seen by woman say it's the best thing I ever did....of course things can happen but that is with anything but like I said most everyone I've seen says they should have done it years ago...

Re: Hyst. without trying other options? Please help
Hi TriscuitWafer
A couple years before my hysterectomy, I saw the website you refer to as well as some others that were very up-front about the risks of a hysterectomy. I am grateful, because that forced me to be sure that the surgery was the best option for my own situation.
Keep in mind, though, that most women do quite well with a hysterectomy. Some of the survey data you'll see on other sites sometimes come from a fairly small survey sample. On HERS, for instance, I think most of the women surveyed had a total abdominal hysterectomy. That is no longer the way the majority of hysterectomies are done, so that may invalidate some of the information.
I would recommend that you get a second opinion. There are other treatment options for fibroids--primarily myomectomy and uterine artery embolization. I had a myomectomy two years before my surgery and then when I grew a new fibroid, I considered a second one as well as a UAE before determining that for me, a hysterectomy was best. Talking with another doctor can give you another point of view, and it might better help you understand all the options for you.
Also, as to your cervix, you might want to know that some women have fibroids develop on the cervix after the uterus is removed. When you talk with your doctor, ask about treatment options for you should that happen.
Many women do well with a myomectomy or UAE and never require a hysterectomy. I am glad that I tried something else first. If I'd had complications with my hysterectomy recovery, I always would've regretted not having tried something else. Other women, however, are quite happy with their decisions to put their bodies through only one procedure and be done with it.
Do your research, and get a second and third opinion--and then do what feels right to you. You can always go back and have the hysterectomy later, but once you have it, it can't be undone.
with your decision!

Re: Hyst. without trying other options? Please help
Thanks everyone. I will definately write out all of my questions and make a 2nd appt. with my GYN and also get a second opinion. He Is a very good doctor but he is very logical and factual and not so compassionette. He did tell me that he does not think any of the other options will last and he feels it's best just to get this done instead of having mulitiple procedures that won't take care of the problems and end up having to get a hyst. anyway. Thanks so much for all the responses. They are truly appreciated.

Re: Hyst. without trying other options? Please help
So many women had the ablation and when that didn't work they ended up having the hysterectomy. That was offered to me but why put yourself through trauma twice? I think you're making a good decision. Best wishes to you!

That's what the doctor was getting at I think. I agree with that. I am also afraid of all the medical bills of repeated procedures along with the extra pain and recovery. I am still going to get a second opinion but I think I will be getting the LSH.
You are all so wonderful! Thanks!

Re: Hyst. without trying other options? Please help
I had ablation done and cysts removed off both ovaries but a few months later the pain was back and that's when my hyst was scheduled.
