Relaxation tapes?

Quote from Johanna Skilling's book on fibroids:
"Dr. Brian Walsh confirms that women who bring relaxation tapes with them into the operating room seem to sail through surgery."

Has anybody done this? Will they let you "listen" to tapes during surgery? What are good relaxation tapes to listen to? How come they don't sell them in the HysterSisters store?

Relaxation tapes?

I had a TAH on Sept. 7th and wanted to be as prepared as possible. I had read Dr. Christiane Northrup's "Womens Bodies,Women's Wisdom", and she recommended Peggy Huddleston's book and tapes. called "Prepare for Sugery, Heal Faster". I sent for both, and found the tape especially to be a great help. When you order both you also get a free hour long consultation on the phone with a woman who has gone though Peggy's training. She will go though some guided imagary to help you think positively about surgery and its outcome. The book has a printed out page to ask your doc to say positive outcome things to you while in surgery. I asked the anesthesiologist to say them to me. and he was glad to. I wanted my surgeon to concentrate on other things! I also sent for a tape that was all about affirmations on surgery and being in the hospital. Dr. Northrup also recommends listening to Mozart with headphones during surgery... it is supposed to be very healing.I did that too. My doc and the anesthesiologist were happy to oblige. My nurses afterward thought it all was a great plan and didn't understand why more people didn't do these things. I believe that with all my preparations and with my positive outlook on my healing, it helped tremendously. I took a whole 3 pain pills in my total recovery, had zero pain and had a very uneventful (the best kind) recovery. I went back to work after 6 weeks, and I work 12 hour shifts at a hospital, and had to move into a new house a week after I started back to work. I am a believer!!

Relaxation tapes?

Thanks Olygal, that's a great help. I contacted our local bookstore up here in Bellingham, and I'll look them over.

Glad you are doing well....

Relaxation Tapes

I am reading this same book and I'm hoping that it helps me. I am very nervous and my blood pressure is showing evidence of it. I've only read a quarter of the book and I feel better already. I'm going to get the tape and try that as well. I feel better already just knowing that I'm taking a personal step to ease my own fears. I hope others do as well. I have 2 weeks to get myself under control. I feel confident that it will work.
