Upcoming hysterectomy: Clothing after surgery
I'm wondering what pajamas/lounge wear I will feel like wearing after coming home. Should I stick to sleep shirts exclusively, or should I attempted loose shorts (loose waistband, no drawstrings, etc)?
Also, I notice ads for the mesh panties...should I look into purchasing them, or will my own panties suffice?
Thank you!

Re: Clothing after surgery
I lived in big t-shirts and sweats for a few weeks after surgery. I didn't buy the mesh underwear but am thinking maybe I should have. I wore bikini underwear so that the band wouldn't irritate my incisions. I did have to buy pants/jeans one size larger to wear when I returned to work because my stomach felt larger. I found it helps to wear a long tank top or undershirt underneath my clothes to act as a barrier between my incisions and pants. I would sometimes have to unbutton my pants at work, thankfully I have my own office. LOL.
Good luck on your surgery. I feel so much better, tired but better.

Upcoming hysterectomy: Clothing after surgery
Today is my 3 week post-op point. I've been in pajama pants and t-shirts almost the entire time. My belly is swollen and I don't want anything tight on it. I don't know what I'll do when I have to go to work. The hospital gave me some mesh panties that I wore the first couple of days. Since then I've just been wearing the same underwear I always do.

Re: Clothing after surgery
The mesh undies were nice because there were no band issues, BUT a larger size granny felt better for me. I'm tall and the bikinis hit right at my incision.
At week three I was in work clothes on job sites. (Overseeing) The binder was really my biggest help when I was up more, but my dr did not want me to use it full time. The elastic waist that you can pull a little higher were nice, because of the afternoon swelly belly. The bra monster attacked me tho, my son took me to the dollar store and I got a slightly larger, no underwire, stretchy bra. Whew that made a difference!

Re: Clothing after surgery
They gave me mesh panties in the hospital, I found them uncomfortable. I preferred regular underwear that were loose. I wore normal clothes, just the looser fitting ones. You will probably be up walking around and might very well want to go out of the house.

Re: Clothing after surgery
I wore the hospital granny panties for a couple of days after surgery, but after that switched to bikini underwear. They come up under my incisions and are low enough that they don't get tight when my belly starts to swell. I couldn't stand anything with a waistband the first week, even a stretchy one. I wore a nightgown or sleep shirt to bed, and when I had to look presentable for visitors etc, wore a loose maxi dress with knee highs. After about a week and a half I could wear leggings under tunics, and pajama pants.
Some ladies on the recovery board are finding maternity jeans/pants helpful for dealing with swelly belly. I considered it, but found that my favorite pair of skinny jeans was cut low enough that they don't get uncomfortable when I get bigger. I also got an abdominal binder a couple of weeks after surgery and wished I'd gotten it earlier - it's been very helpful for comfort (especially when riding in the car!)

Re: Clothing after surgery
I'm 3 weeks post DaVinci hyst with 4 small lap incisions. I've worn sweat pants the entire time. I didn't like the huge hospital mesh panties the extra material cut into my thighs and belly. I like regular granny panties or what used to be my period underwear! Lol. I have worn a panty liner everyday too for some very light drainage but you might want regular pads too as some sisters mention more bleeding. I still can't fathom wearing jeans but might buy just one pair of maternity jeans to bridge the gap and have something to wear on New Years Eve at my sister in laws except these **** sweats!! I also love my abdominal binder they "gave" me at hospital, I still wear it off/on. Good luck to you!

Re: Clothing after surgery
I had my surgery a week ago, and have been living in over-sized t-shirts and nightgowns since coming home. They give you mesh panties to wear in the hospital when you no longer need/if you don't need a catheter, but after that I've not used any special sort of underwear. For the ride home I wore pajama/lounge pants with elastic waist and, again, regular cotton underwear (and a pad in case of spotting).

Re: Clothing after surgery
I've been wearing sweat pants and yoga pants. I tried putting on jeans the other day but they were too uncomfortable. I just wear sweaters that I would normally wear this time of year. My mom got me two pairs of elastic waist pajamas. One pair is lighter weight and the other is thicker. I've been wearing the same underwear I had before surgery. It's a satin material brief and I have some bikini cut ones. Hanes used to make them but I'm not sure if they still do. I wear sports bras regularly since they give me extra support and the straps aren't constantly falling down. They've been good post-op too. I also love my abdominal binder. I woke up with it on in recovery. I've been taking it off at night though.

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy: Clothing after surgery
I had abdominal surgery with a 7" vertical incision. Once I got home, I wore my older pairs of cotton briefs on which the elastic in the waistband had begun to give out.
I live in a small apartment, so I started walking outside as soon as possible (four days after surgery) and also spent a lot of time sitting outside reading and sewing. This meant that I needed to wear "normal" clothing. I generally wore loose pants or shorts (this was in June) and T-shirts. For bras, I just wore my usual sports bras. For walking, I wore sneakers.
The one issue I had with clothing is that the zipper on my pants extended above the waistband of my underwear, and my staples tended to catch in the zipper. I tucked a soft bandanna in between the zipper and the staples, and that worked fine. :-)
