Upcoming hysterectomy 1/14: Question about post hysterectomy operation appointments
I found out on tuesay 1/6/15 that my surgery (abdominal) is scheduled on wednesday 1/14/15. I wasn't planning on it coming up so soon but i'm happy for it (i want my satan organ gone...too much pain) and i've been scrambling to get things done/ switch other appointments around. I went to WIC to see if i could have my mother take my 2 small kiddos (i'm staying mith my mom so i'm not lone with out help for me or my 2 kids, adn husband has to work to make ends meat) to their recert appointment and told them i was having this surgery 12 days prior to what was scheduled there. this woman looks at me and says "oh you'll be fine, you can make it" SERIOUSLY RUDE ATTITUDE. she said she had hers done abdominal too and she was fine after two weeks. so she rescheduled me to 2/2/15. so my question... What are other ladies experiences? were you able to truck around a 2 & 4 year old 2 weeks post op? I'm pretty darn scared, which is why i've waited so long to even talk to my doc about this surgery (i'm terrified of surgery, and no, the vag path is not an option!) this is not the first time someone at the WIC office has basically told me to suck it up...example: after just having 1st child and living with my mother who babysat my small (at the time) niece and nephew of my very conservative brother and sister inlaw "oh so you have trouble breastfeeding infront of them? i ran a daycare out of my home and breastfed" I'm not these people/women and i'm pretty sick of them acting like superwoman and as if their superior to others. i appreciate the support of WIC and not all employees are like this but it's not right in my opinion. they're supposed to be there for support, not to shame other women into what they believe in. soo... 2 weeks post op abdominal, what can i expect?

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 1/14: Question about post operation appointments
Sorry about the attitude you're getting. I was 50, almost 51, when I had a TAH/BSO with a vertical incision. I went grocery shopping with my husband 11 days after my surgery because I was supposed to be walking and the weather had gotten cold. For some strange reason I thought I had to wear jeans. Both of these were bad ideas. The jeans were uncomfortable and the trip wore me out and made me feel awful. A trip out a little over a week later wasn't much better. I also had lifting restrictions for 6 weeks - nothing more than 10 lbs and couldn't drive for 2 weeks and that was provided I was no longer on narcotics. We all recovery at different rates and I imagine you are a good bit younger than I am. You may do okay with the appointment, but I would think you would have lifting restrictions and possibly driving restrictions. Since you have a 2 yr old and a 4 yr old, at a minimum I would think you would need someone to go with you.
Good luck with your surgery.

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 1/14: Question about post operation appointments
well, i would just send my partner but he works two jobs. i just really want to take my time to heal properly and not make anything worse than i can help. i'm just surprised they wouldn't let my mother do it. I figure I'll heal fast because besides having mental health issues adn problems with my uterus and ovary i'm strong and healthy. I have PTSD adn am schizoaffective do it's not just physical things that worry me, i'm pretty mentally prepared for this but i have no clue how i'll be after surgery and being stuck in bed. I can't mix my psych meds with painkillers so i've been with out them to get them out of my system for a while and will still not be on them for a while after. so i am not sure how mentally stable i'll be after

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 1/14: Question about post operation appointments
Could you and your mom go together? She could get your kids in and out of the car/car seats, carry your younger one if needed, and you would be there to fill out paperwork, talk to the WIC staff, or whatever is required for recert. She could also drive if you're not released to do that by appt time.
As far as the narcotic pain meds go, hopefully you won't need them for too long and can get started back on your psych meds. How long they are needed is different for everyone with some needing them longer than others. I took the narcotic pain meds while I was in the hospital (2 nights) and only at night the first 3 nights after I got home. I was also taking 2400 mg of ibuprofen daily (did that for a month). Don't know if ibuprofen or Tylenol would be an issue with your psych meds, hopefully not.
Hope you have a quick recovery and being off your meds for awhile doesn't cause any additional issues.

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 1/14: Question about post operation appointments
((xpipandcheriosx)) I am so sorry that the WIC people are being so unreasonable. You are dealing with a lot right now and you don't need this added wrench thrown into the works.
I echo what others have said -- please take your Mom with you to this appointment. You don't need to try to take your two kids by yourself and if they are being that hard to deal with, you need the moral support. I wish I was there so I could help you out.
Hang in there -- you will get through this. I know this is hard to do but try to put this on the back burner not let yourself bite that part off now. The most important thing right now is for you to take care of you. Concentrate on getting all the things done that you need to before surgery and then go into surgery knowing everything is ready. Then when you come home after surgery you will be able to concentrate on your recovery.
Have you talked to your doctor about your fears and concerns about not being on part of your meds? He is there to help you through that hurdle.
I am so glad that you found HysterSisters. Please know that we are here for you. You are not going through this journey alone.
Please join us on your post-op forum after surgery. You willl meet other ladies who are also having surgery next week and it will be a big encouragement to you.
on your surgery. We will see you on the other side.

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 1/14: Question about post operation appointments
thank you ladies so much for the support! today was my pre op appointment and my doctor set my anxiety to rest, thankfully! day after tomorrow i'm goin in. i'm confident in my doctor and his ability to preform, i'm confident in my body's ability to heal, adn i'm confident in my support system here at home and so thankful to have found hystersisters. my mother inlaw has had the same surgery i'm in for TAH and she calms me down a lot but her cut was lateral and mine will be horizontal. i'm pretty mentally prepared adn have my Rx for psych meds appointment set to get that under control ASAP. all the pieces are falling perfectly and i can rest well tonight.
