Scared and nervous

Hi,
I'm new here and I'm scheduled for a TAH on June 28. I'm 39 years old, married and have 2 children. Until about 3 years ago I did not have any problems and started getting ovarian cysts. I have several laparoscopies to remove them. 2 years ago I had an ectopic pregnancy. Since then, my doctor discovered that I have fibroid tumors, endometriosis and adhesions on my ovaries. My period have become so irregular and of course when I'm having my period it's extremely heavy and very painful.

I'm not really scared of the surgery itself; I am scared of how I will feel emotionally. I'm worried that I will feel "empty" and I am sad that this is so final. Absolutely no chance of anymore children, although with all the problems that I have had it woudn't have been possible anyway. My emotions have been all over the place, probably due to fluctuating hormones and nervousness.

I don't have my pre-op appointment until June 21, and my doctor said with a TAH I would be in the hospital for a "few days." Now, a few days to him may be different than a few days to me and I really don't know what to expect.

So anyway, that's my story and I'm so glad I found this site. Although I have friends (and my mom) who have had hysterectomies, none have had a TAH.

Re: Scared and nervous

Hi HthrH. It is absolutely normal for feel scared and nervous. I think we have all been there with the feeling of finality in ourlives. I know I was there a not long ago and I had to give myself time to grieve over what could have been. Allow youself to do the same and before long you and I will be on the other side wondering why it took us so long to get here.

Hang in there!
