11 days post op and bowel pain is horrible

Hi ladies
I'm 11 days post op from Robotic hysterectomy and bladder sling. The pain in my ovaries and subsided and bladder is getting better, however the pain in my bowel is horrible. Feels like a train is driving through. I am going though so nothing is stuck, and it's not hard, so I have no idea what it could be but it's scaring me. Anyone else have this? I see my doc Thursday to remove stitches.

Re: 11 days post op and bowel pain is horrible

I am 5 1/2 weeks post op, and the bowel pain was the worst for me the week after I came home. The doctor had told me I could eat what I want, but I had friends tell me to stick to a soft diet (advice before surgery). I learned the hard way that they knew what they were talking about and my doctor didn't, bless his heart.

If you aren't already, I would stick to a modified BRAT diet (bananas, rice, apples toast) with other soft foods: eggs, pudding, jello, oatmeal, etc.

Also, Gas-X saved my life. I found that the waking up of the digestive system after surgery was the only real pain I had to deal with, honestly. Friends tried to tell me that ahead of time, but I geared up for pain from actual surgery. That's not what happened, though, and it was the gas and digestive pain that had me begging God for my life. Once I realized that, I've been very careful about what I eat and have Gas-X handy.

I still can't eat fried or fatty foods, or my body will revolt. But as long as I'm eating healthy, I don't have pain now. I should be grateful--I'm 15 pounds down since surgery, but sometimes it would be nice to eat what I want. I'm sure I'll get there and wish I couldn't. haha.

I hope this has been helpful! The pain shouldn't last much longer for you. It does get better really soon. From what I've read, everyone goes through it during that first week as your body is processing the air that's still in your abdomen after surgery. The pain typically doesn't last though. I only have had a recurrence or two since then from being stupid with what I ate . . .

Blessings,
moqs

Thank you soooo much for replying. I was really beginning to think something was wrong. I mean once the bowel or a gas bubbles passes through a certain area, the pain is almost crippling and I can't really sit upright comfortably.

Re: 11 days post op and bowel pain is horrible

You may know this already, but walking around often helps. The first two or more weeks after surgery, whenever I would get up to to go the bathroom, or for whatever reason, I would walk the hallways in my house for just a few minutes. I made myself do it. When I felt up to it, I would walk around in my back yard (about the second week). It felt good to get out in the sunshine.

The nurses at the hospital told me several times (different nurses) that the more you walk around, the quicker recovery will be. They were right. I forced myself to do it and it paid off. I figured as long as it's not going to hurt me to do it, it can only help. And it did.

It especially helps with the gas and getting things to go back to normal. But I know that when you have the crippling pain, you can't walk or do anything, that's for sure. I would just breathe through it, get wide eyes, think I was going to die, and then it would be over eventually, thankfully!

Happy to help you know it's normal!

Re: 11 days post op and bowel pain is horrible

Thanks It's just weird because I'm not really bloated, gassy I don't think. I only go once a day usually in the am. So it's weird and when I sit up, the pain is in one spot. But I'm listening to you ladies and thinking it's normal and praying for relief soon I am so glad to have found this site and going to refer my friend who is having Davinci surgery next Monday. She has just had a total mastectomy and her cancer is hormone fed so now she is having a total hysterectomy. She's my hero

I am at 6 weeks and I found the bowel pain to be the most bothersome. It just seemed as my bowels filled, I got more and more uncomfortable. Used the stool softeners, and foods to promote "going" but I still get a bit sore still at this time, as my bowel figures out it's place. Hang in there!
