Will be having Da Vinic surgery in September

5 years ago I was diagnosed with fibroids. I had a 4mm fibroid in the cervical canal and a few others. It was suggested that I have a Hysterectomy. I also was a heavy bleeder with all the other symptoms. My OB/GYN however did not diagnose my Anemia it was my family doctor. To make a long story short My current OB/GYN strongly recommended I do something about my fibroids after doing an ultrasound he gave me 3 chooses. Hysterectomy, Uterine Artery Embolization or a drug called Lupron. After doing research I decided on the Uterine Artery Embolization and went for my MRI. The MRI showed I had pedunculated fibroids and I was not a good candidate for the Uterine Artery Embolization. I was crushed I was really looking forward to having a normal life without all the heavy bleeding, bloating, pain, etc.
So I called my OB/GYN and he said I would be a good candidate for the da Vinci® Hysterectomy. He wants to remove my uterus and cervix. When I told him I’d like to keep my cervix he said it was not proved that keeping it gave you a better sex life, etc. From everything I read I really want to keep my cervix. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
I’m to have my surgery Sep 7th and I’m scared. They just started offering the da Vinci® Hysterectomy in my area in May and have only done 30 procedures. There are 3 doctors performing this procedure.
I live alone with my 3 dogs in the country. I do not have anyone here who can help me after the surgery. However my sisters are coming from Michigan and Florida for 1 week after my surgery. I will be off work for 3 weeks. I don’t know what I’m going to do after my sisters leave am I going to be able to take care of myself and my dogs?
I am wondering am I going to be getting rid of one problem for another. I’m currently 50 years old when I was in my 20’s I had surgery for a rectal prolapsed (my bowels where tied up with something to keep them from falling out) and I’m wondering if this has anything to do with the fibroids or if it will hamper surgery in any way.
I just don't know what to do.

Re: Will be having Da Vinic surgery in September

In the beginning I wanted to keep my cervix out of fear that it would cause issues with my bladder and sex life. My Dr assured me it wouldnt affect anything, 3 people in my life assured me it made no difference in them, and I read a lot here and realized the majority of women dont miss the cervix at all.
I went ahead and let it go. Im not to the point of sex yet, but all the same sensations are there vaginally so Im confident nothing has changed and I will be just fine in that department. As far as bladder issues, my bladder is actually better than before. I have some bladder burning from the dye test that I had done, but that will alleviate over time. The minor leakage problems that I had before when coughing or sneezing are gone!

My Dr has only done a few davinci hysterectomys on his own since being in practice. Most of his experience so far was as an intern when he was training on the robot. He has been an awesome Dr for me so far, and the training for the robot is so extensive, that I honestly didnt worry. He did a great job, and in half the time he quoted me even though I had more work that needed done than he expected.

The davinci was great. You are going to be sore that first week, and rest is your friend, but when your sisters leave I am sure you will be fine. You wont be 100% but you will likely be able to care for yourself just fine. Just done overstrain those sore tummy muscles, dont lift anything heavier than a tea or milk jug, and rest when your body tells you to.

Re: Will be having Da Vinic surgery in September

I had a Davinci Hysterectomy on June 22. I was in the same place you are right now. Keep Cervix or not? I asked my doctor, he simply put it as "No need to keep the barn door if you are not keeping the barn!" So I agreed to have it out. The first couple of days were the hardest, but in two weeks I was begging to get out of my house! Three weeks I went back to work. I can honestly tell you that it was the best decision I have ever, ever made to have the Davinci. I feel better than I have in longer than I can even remember. My uterus was huge, the report was 14.7 cm and the one fiberoid I had on top/in it was 10.5 cm. Bigger than I thought!! Being scared is normal, but you will be fine and so much happier after! Good luck!
