How important is the pre-op chat?

I have a rehearsal scheduled at the time of the only pre-op chat before my surgery. I might be able to get it moved if the chat is really important/helpful. But, since others are involved I would rather not inconvenience them.

Re: How important is the pre-op chat?

I would encourage you to reflect on your statement. You should take your own seriously, and part of that is going to your appointments. Given that you have never had this procedure done before, it would be a good idea to go to the appointment and a conversation with your doctor about whats going to happen, what to expect, when to be concerned, healing, recovery, etc. This is your life you are talking about, you're going to be tired after the surgery and probably would be better prepared if you had the pre op chat with your doctor. While missing the rehearsal might inconvenience some people, they don't have to live in your body- you do, for the rest of your life. Take your health seriously, you both owe it to yourself and deserve to.

I may come off as stern sounding, but its really troublesome to me that you would put a rehearsal in front of your own health, particularly on such a major operation as this.

Please, be kind to yourself and give yourself the best possible chance at a good recovery.

Re: How important is the pre-op chat?

You misunderstand. I am talking about the pre-op chat they offer through hystersisters. Not my pre-op appointment with my doctor. Don't worry, that I am most defiantly going to.
Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Re: How important is the pre-op chat?

dancingsister-
I did not do the pre op chat offered here, I had to work that day. I am sure it is a great forum for getting a lot of questions answered, I just didn't have the time to do it. The info I got from this site, the forums and my Dr's pre op were enough for me to get all my questions answered and I felt I was fully prepared for the operation and post op care.

Good Luck!

Re: How important is the pre-op chat?

My answer is the same as amrayne... I did not participate in any of the 'chats' - so I don't know if they are more helpful than reading the posts and the pre-op checklist. You will find that this site can offer great suggestions and info as to what we are/did go thru - but we are not doc's - so star killer is also correct - even if you have read something on here - it is always better to ask your doc the same questions - because you and your doc know your history, what may or may not complicate things for you and your procedure... ask questions - make lists - and if you are at all 'shy' get over it - remember that the doc and nurses have heard it all - if it concerns you and your future health - ask and ask often.

You are a woman, you are strong, you will do great!!!

Re: How important is the pre-op chat?

I didn't do any of the chats, I just read the articles and discussions and posted questions.

Re: How important is the pre-op chat?

Oh goodness, you'll have to excuse my post then. I was really concerned that you weren't going into your doctors office!!

I didn't do the pre op chat here either, just read articles here and various other places. However, I wouldn't do that again, it seemed to cause more stress for me knowing all the possible things that could go wrong.

Re: How important is the pre-op chat?

I thought the same thing Star killer--I totally misunderstood! I'm glad we're talking about the pre-op chat.

I didn't do it either. Between my own google searches/reading, the information on here, the questions on here and posting, I felt pretty well prepared. I also generated all sorts of questions for my doc and scheduled an appointment just to talk--no exam. With all of that, I didn't feel the need for anything else. It's a great tool if you need it, but I didn't 'need' it.

Re: How important is the pre-op chat?

Thanks everyone! Now I feel that I can skip the chat and not feel like I'm missing something really important.

Re: How important is the pre-op chat?

Just an FYI - the pre-op chats ARE very important to the women who enjoy meeting others who are going into surgery within the same timeframe as themselves. Yes, the website is chockfull of all the information you need (especially the APP with the checkpoints which has all the information set up by dates synced with your surgery date) - but we offer the pre-op chats for the additional reason as it gives our members a place to talk live with staff and other women who are feeling the same as you. Some are frightened and worried. Some are panicked. For those women who attend - they would share with you that the preop chats were very helpful.

Once you have your surgery, you will appreciate the support of other members who are recovering with you - and the great help of those ahead of you in recovery.

Big hugs to you!
