freaking out

I have twenty-four days till my laparoscopic hysterectomy. I've been feeling at peace with my choice until today. I'm slightly freaking out, not because of the surgery itself because I definitely need it but more about wheeling into surgery, the morning of surgery and the pain afterwards.

I have a low pain tolerance. My periods are painful but my last surgery was a gallbladder removal and the first six days were awful. I barely slept, I was in pain and exhausted. I'm worried about how I'm going to feel.

Tomorrow they are calling to set up my surgery time and to make sure I'm still good for the seventeenth plus set up my.pre-op appointment. I need to calm down, but I can't

Re: freaking out

Hi! I am 16 days post op da Vinci. I was absolutely horrified before my surgery as well. My main concern was pain medication. I am allergic to so many and the only one I know not to be allergic to is demerol. I was told pre op that the hospital I would be in, would NOT give demerol. Of course that terrified me even more. Luckily, the morphine worked without any reaction. I have been doing really well since my surgery and trying to deal with all these new sensations in my body. Just take things one day at a time and don't rush back into things. I made the mistake of doing that and boy, will your body let you know it! Rest often, drink plenty of water, do some walking and check onto this site often! These wonderful ladies help put my mind to rest before my surgery and have been a God send! I wish you all the best and please know that you are NOT alone! Hugs!

Re: freaking out

It's a really good idea to discuss pain control with your doctor before your surgery date. Express your concerns and what your experience was after your last surgery. Also ask what prescription you will be given to take at home and whether or not s/he will refill it if needed. I think that's really important as some people find their doctor won't refill their script. I ran out before a long weekend and my doctor was out of the office. I had to cry on the phone in order to get another doctor in the practice to phone the pharmacy for me. It is their policy to not phone in prescriptions with codeine. I did not realize that.

Freaking out is normal. This is a big deal. It helps to keep busy preparing things. Give the bathroom a good cleaning and the kitchen too, as you won't be doing that for a while post op. Pick out a couple "treats" for yourself too, a good book you've been wanting to read maybe. I splurged and bought myself a really pretty nightie.
