Tip for reducing post-surgery sore throat and coughing

According to a new study, gargling with a licorice solution a few minutes before receiving general anesthesia with intubation reduces the sore throat and post-surgical coughing:

How to make a licorice gargle:

Boil about 1 teaspoon licorice powder (available at health food stores) in 1.5 cups of water, then filter (you can use a paper coffee filter). Gargle should be kept at room temperature and used within 24 hours.

Makes sense because licorice contains compounds with anti-inflammatory and anti-irritant effects. Of course, ask your DR before doing this.
