Nausea after surgery

I get a drug for nausea and vomiting called Droperidol- so far it is the only drug that works for me. It goes in the IV and in many hospitals only anesthesiologists can use it. I had to fight for my local hospital to get it and now other patients have benefitted from my efforts. If the drugs they give you dont work, then it might be worth asking for this one.

Nausea after surgery

I hope all the ladies in waiting are reading this. I felt wonderful after surgery and the next morning until they said "time to get up"!!! I got sooooo nauseated. I tried my best and just couldn't, so they gave me medication for the nausea and within 30 min, I was up and fine. I think it would have been best to just give it to me to begin with. Other than the bout with the nausea, I did great!

Cindy-- If you were on morphine, morphine has more of a tendency to make you ill if you are mobile that lying still. Many codeine products can have that effect too.

Zofran worked for me too!

Zofran is what they gave me during my gallbladder surgery since i told them I tend to get nauseated too. After surgery, my anesthetist told me to tell them the minute I started to feel nausea and he had something ordered. I think it was Compazine IV and it worked great too.

The other "hint' he gave me was to think of some food that I REALLY like. He told me that you can't be hungry and nauseous at the same time! This worked great for my teenage son when he had his broken leg set. As he was coming out of anesthesia they gave him the "suggestion" that he was hungry for a burger and he never did get sick.

Good luck to all!

Nausea after surgery

I had forgotten until you said something but you are so right. The anesthesiologist asked me what had been craving lately and they whispered that in my ear too. Told me there had been studies on it and that it did work! Hmmmm interesting!

Nausea after surgery

Oh, I wish I had seen this post before my surgery! I was INCREDIBLY nauseated starting immediately when I woke up in recovery, and lasting about 2 weeks.

I didn't get any help from the nurses, even though I was throwing up violently. I desperately wish I had this information and knew what to ask for! I couldn't take any pain meds at all during my recovery (even the first day) due to the nausea. It was horrible.

I hope all pre-op's read this and are prepared to ask for what they need! Do NOT let them tell you they can't help you!

Sheri, I don't remember what I had, it was in the pump, but it wasn't morphine. Maybe it did have Codine, but its never made me sick before.. Do they put demerol in the pump? Could have been that.

You don't have to suffer

I always after being put under. Until the surgery before the hyst. I told all that wanted to listen that I hate getting sick. He said that he would give me something before I woke up and I never got sick. Then when I went in for my hyst I told them to look in my chart and give me whatever I got last time. He said "It looks like he gave you everything, I'll do that too" I never got sick from the anesthesia. It pays to speak up and let them know that you get ill, there are so many things to prevent it.

Nausea after surgery

I can not remember for the life what I was given! I will try to find out though.
I do remember it was 2 pills and a very small cup (about an ounce) of the most awful tasting liquid I have ever encountered!! UGH! I was given these about 20 minutes prior to surgery along with my Xanax.
But Boy it worked! I always after surgery but not this time! Never felt nausea at all!
LIW tell your DR, Nurses, and anesthesiologist that this is a probelm for you, tell everyone loudly if you have to until they listen!!!
Good Luck to all!
