MAJOR doctor OOPS!
I had my SAH on 12/7, my cervix was too attached to the bladder therefore they were unable to remove it. Overaries were left, uterus was removed. Everything else went great. I have had numerous operations in the past, 6 c-section (type) surgeries in the past, therefore the healing time for me was nothing and I and am up and going in 2 days and was back to work in 15 days... no bleeding. Went back to the dr. yesterday for my 6 week check up and yesterday morning - I starting having a mild period - yes that is correct - a period. I asked my dr. about it and she said, it was probably just the stitches coming out from the inside. So then she did the internal exam and said, 'you are probably not going to like what I have to tell you'... and then proceeded to tell me that there was a small part of the uterus left as it too was attached to the bladder. This was causing the bleeding and 'may' continue to cause the bleeding monthly. WHAT!!! Who has a hysterctomy and then still has a period???? If she could not get it all why didn't she tell me this at the time of the surgery? Then she tells me that I will not have any pain with this and it won't be like a period... bull- craps, started today. She also told me, that if the bleeding does continue for a few months and if its a continuous thing, she will have to do another surgery to go back in and burn out what is left of the uterus. Has anyone else ever heard of this and what on earth should I do? This is all so new to me and my head is just spinning. Then my husband says, could you get pregnant? I said no, but what if it fertalizes and then settles into the part of the uterus that is there and starts to grow but cannot sustain, I guess it would miscarry at that point...? What should I do??? Help Friends?!

Your situation is very similar to mine. My cervix was supposed to be removed but it had adhered to my bladder and so had to be left. The cervix is actually part of the uterus and, if you have your cervix (plus ovaries), you can experience "mini-periods".
The ovaries produce the hormones that cause the bleeding and, since the cervix is part of the uterus, it can bleed also. Most ladies have their cervix cauterised during surgery, which prevents it for the majority. My cervix wasn't cauterised and I was told to expect a "mini-period" every month.
If you do a "search" (click third from the right, on the purple bar, towards the top of this page) you'll find many threads/posts about mini-periods. We also have an HS article <link> Mini-Periods which will help to explain a little more.
I was told that the first 6 months would probably be the "worst" in terms of bleeding and that it would fade after that. At almost 3 years post-op, the spotting is so slight that it doesn't even require a liner anymore, and I'm happy to use it as an indicator that my ovaries are still working.
If you find you cannot cope with it, or the idea, then you can have the procedure that your doctor is talking about ~ doctors do offer cauterisation (or further) cauterisation following surgery for this.
I know it must be a shock, but try not to worry. Do a little research and then discuss it with your doctor and decide what's best for you. Take care!

No wonderful words of wisdom like pooodle has for you but I just think your situation stinks.
So sorry that this had to happen to anyone.
You aren't my sister Betty are you? This is exactly the kind of crap that happens to her ALL the time. It is a joke that she lives under a black cloud but that is how it seems sometimes.
Pamper yourself and try to just get over the surgery for now and deal with the problems in a couple of months.
Sorry that I can't help you.

the uterus is actually part of the cervix so if too much is left in, that can happen. probably at the time, she took what she felt was safe to take since it was adhered to your bladder. obviously either there was too much left or the top of the cervix wasnt cauterized. did you ask her if she was able to cauterize it? i also kept my cervix and ovaries and was aware i could get mini periods..but took the chance since i did not want them removed.
i did bleed, with clots, quite heavily around a month or so after my hysterectomy and once it stopped, it never happened again. its been over a year. you might want to just wait and see if it slows down and stops..and doesnt happen again.
sorry you are having these problems

The way my surgeon explained it - he left 1/2 my cervix - is that the lining of the uterus can shift down into the cervix, and it is the lining that produces the mini-periods, because it is the lining that is shed.
I had VERY slight - heck, too small to be stains - for several months. 7 months out, and I haven't seen anything for a couple of months now.
Do your homework, and see how it goes! I kinda wonder why they didn't switch to an abdominal surgery if all that stuff was stuck together.
HUGS and I hope you get answers and a solution soon.

MAJOR doctor OOPS!
It was an abdomonial surg. It was a Supracervical Abdominal Hysterectomy. I guess I will just have to keep track of this and see how it goes a for few months and monitor this. Thanks for the feed back. Please continue to email me as I am not very good at navigating this website yet. Thanks!

Hi Ellie Mae4,
It sounds like you had a SAH (Subtotal Abdominal Hyst). The cervix is kept with the surgery type.
As other Hyster Sisters mentioned, many ladies have a mini-period in post-op...and they do not go back in and have the cervix removed. So take heart there. I agree...a watch-and-see is a good idea.
In the meantime, you might even get a 2nd opinion. In my view, some of your trust might have been broken with your Dr. since as you said...why did she not mention that this could happen *before* surgery??? A 2nd opinion might just make you feel better about your direction with this. Just a thought.
Sending best wishes~
Mary
