Difficulty breathing under anesthetic due to CO2 gas under skin. Anyone else?
My surgery was 6 months ago and I knew there had been issues regarding my breathing while under anesthesia. My surgeon indicated she wasn't sure why but now I have a copy of everyone's notes and have spoken to my anesthesiologist. Apparently it was due to a complication of the CO2 gas used during the laparoscopic procedure where the gas gets into the preperitoneal cavity and can cause "a decrease in lung compliance" while under anesthetic. They were also concerned it had caused injury to the colon and small bowel. I'm so relieved to hear it wasn't the anesthesia per se but am now concerned that someone goofed here. Is this common? Was this a risk I signed off on the pre-op waiver? Anyone heard of this?
