Storing blood for surgery - and safe levels?

I was reading an older thread here about transfusions during surgery for those with anemia and that carries risk of rejecting the blood.

Is that less of an issue if someone in your family donated on your behalf? I'll ask my doctor when I see her next week, but I was wondering in the meantime if anyone here had done that.

My daughter and I share the same blood type and she said she'd be happy to donate ahead of time. I can't store my own because of my anemia. My hemoglobin was at 7.8, hemocrit at 26%, and ferritin at 3 before my 8 weeks of Venofer (iron infusions) I just completed. I am sure my levels are better (appt with hematologist Tuesday) but not great because the bleeding hasn't abated. I'm just hoping I can keep them in the safe zone until the surgery is over.

I was told family blood is actually not any more likely to match, and my local blood bank doesn't do "directed donations". I'm not sure if that holds true everywhere, you can ask to be sure. I hope you end up not needing blood. It's sweet of your DD to offer.
