Birth Control

Hi ladies. I have a bit of a strange question. In August of this year I had an emergency partial hysterectomy following a PPH. Only my uterus was removed. I seem to be having a hard time finding out if any sort of birth control needs to be considered in the future. I know I cannot carry a child to term again because of the lack of uterus but I am a bit worried about an ectopic pregnancy, etc. I've already faced one life threatening condition and don't want to put myself in that predicament again. Does anyone have any info? Thank you.

Re: Birth Control

Hi Spunky,
What an interesting question - I googled online. You had your (uterus) 'baby box' removed. To have a baby attach somewhere would be rare (fallopian tube/body cavity). I don't think birth control is made to work in other parts of your body except for your uterus (hormones and shedding of the uterine lining). It would be extrememly rare to even be able to get pregnant now. I think you will be fine as this would be so extremely rare after having a hysterectomy, but you should just place a call with your dr office and ask them, to put your mind at ease.

Re: Birth Control

I think if you have your uterus removed, then there would be no way for sperm to reach an egg, right? I'm guessing your cervix was sewn up and therefore, sperm would not be able to travel to reach the tubes, which connected to your uterus. Talk to your doctor to be sure though!

Re: Birth Control

We have an article about pregnancy after hysterectomy. You can read it here: Pregnancy after hysterectomy.

Hope this helps!

Re: Birth Control

Thank you so much for your comments and for the reference to the article. I was able to check my operative report (I had previously obtained a copy) and confirmed the cervix was stitched. As per the article, this should mean no possibility of pregnancy. I'm going to give my OB-GYN a call just to be sure but the article itself has put my min more at ease. Thanks everyone!

Re: Birth Control

Phoned the OB-GYN today and as per the article, she confirmed that the cervix was stitched and therefore no chance of a pregnancy occurring in a tube, etc. Thanks again!
