Upcoming hysterectomy: First post-getting nervous! Gas pain concerns
Hi! I have been lurking for awhile now, and you ladies are amazing and so supportive!
My abdominal hysterectomy is scheduled for the 8th, and I have been studying for this surgery like I was preparing for the bar exam!
My surgeon told me that because if fibroids on both ovaries, she isn't sure what she is going to "leave behind" but I have adenomyosis and possible endometriosis, so she said that she will make the decision when she is "in there" and let me know after because it depends on the damage of the organs what she will take. I trust her, she seems pretty no-nonsense and kind at the same time. It also helps that she is in the same practice as my regular gyn.
I had a c-section 15years ago, and I can still remember the gas pains. I am going to go on liquid diet the weekend prior to surgery to see if that can help. I read on here that a lot of people do a bowel cleansing the day before on the request of the surgeon, but she hasn't said anything to me, and when I went to preop testing on Thursday, they said it hadn't been brought up.
My question, is should I ask for it to make my gas pains less? Or does anyone think that just the liquid diet 48 hours prior be enough? I
Having had the csection when I was 26 and my gas pains were awful, but my recovery was pretty quick. At 42, I know that I won't recover as quickly, especially because of previous scar tissue...
Thanks!

Re: First post-getting nervous!
First, good luck to you! Before I had mine, the biggest complaints I heard from friends who had already had hysterectomies were about the gas pains. Most said the surgery location didn't really hurt but the gas pains were really irritating. I did do a bowel prep and liquid diet, and I didn't have gas pains or constipation problems. I don't know if it was due to the bowel prep, but I was thinking that maybe it was. I just had to do one small bottle of magnesium citrate, it wasn't too awful.

Hi Kerri0272 to HysterSisters!
Do not do any bowel prep unless your doctor specifically asks for it. Some ladies do a bowel prep before surgery, some do not. It is surgery dependent and doctor preference. What is important is to ONLY do a bowel prep if your doctor asks that of you.
Also, follow your doctors instructions regarding diet. Do not go on a liquid diet two days before your surgery, unless asked by your doctor to do so.
This is all very important, and is for your health. Your doctor is expecting you to be in a certain condition, and will be making decisions and giving you meds based on that expectation. We had one lady on this site do a bowel prep without her doctor asking her to and ended up in the ICU because of it.
Regarding C-Section and at TAH. Keep in mind that a hysterectomy is removing an internal organ. That can be a big difference. Here is an article on Abdominal Hysterectomy vs. C-Section.
Know we are here for you an understand what you are going through.

Re: First post-getting nervous!
Thanks guys! When I went through my preop the other day, it was actually a recovery nurse that went over everything with me. I had asked her about the liquid for 48 hours and she said that was a great idea. My surgeon told me she was going to be calling me on Monday or Tuesday this week, just to go over any more questions and I was going to have, and I figured I would clear it with her.
I definitely understand the difference between the two, I was just using the incision healing time as the example.

Re: First post-getting nervous!
Also, as bad as I know the entire recup is going to be, it will be over in a few weeks...my period has been so debilitating for the last year, I have only had one week per month where I wasn't pmsing for a week, precramping for a week, and then of course, the big event week.
Kind of excited that that will all be over to be honest. Trying to be positive underneath the terror of the unknown...how bad will it be for me, what if there are complications, etc. thank goodness my hubby is mentally ready, as is my 17 year old son.
