Any swimmers-or other athletes-out there?
I recently have gotten back in the pool to do laps after an 8 wk post op hiatus.
It's been slow building up the distance, but I'm good at patient, so that's ok.
My question is if anyone else has experienced an increased feeling of tummy numbness after swimming or really, what anyone's experiences have been getting back into a physical routine.

oh I am so happy to find fellow athletes. One of my biggest fears is not being the athlete I was before the hyst. My times were getting better (for marathons), I was really improving. I am terrified to run and I can't wait to swim. Was it really tiring? I really hope you ladies keep in touch and let me know how your progress is with working out again. I am only 10 days post op so I don't have much to contribute. I take a 10lb weight and do arm workouts and that is about it.

Any swimmers-or other athletes-out there?
I am not an athlete, but, as soon as I got my "ok" (in hot July) I jumped into our community pool thinking this is one exercise that I could do! I found myself trying to swim, but, it felt more like I was just kicking my legs treading water and bobbing. I used a noodle floatie under my arms to help me stay afloat while I stroked. I had no strength at all, even in my arms. Again, I am not an athlete but swimming is something I have done my whole life. Take it sloooow! I am 6 months out now and I still don't think I would be able to kick in the water. I have been walking about two miles almost every day for the past few months, and my muscles still don't feel very strong.
I guess being fit before going into this operation really had it benefits! But again, please listen to what your body is saying! Mine tells me it will still be a while before I am back up to "normal" speed. Best to you!!!

Your muscles will atrophy at an incredible rate-its almost crazy at how fast they will disapear after all the time you spend working to firm them up. Take your time and stay with your program. One thing muscles have going for them is that they never forget and eventually they will remember what you want them to do and they will do it. It just may take some time. Also, you had major surgery - allow your body - including your muscles the time it needs to heal - don't push it - one step and one day at a time and before you knowit you will be there. After my initial breast cancer it was almost a year before I did my first sprint 1/2 mile swim, 15 mile bike, 5 mile run. And I only can in half way in the survivor group. See, it takes a long long time. Lynn

Any swimmers-or other athletes-out there?
I just started running again this week (LAVH, kept ovaries). I am basically on the program my coach uses for people after they have taken time off after a marathon, I feel about the same (kind of like I haven't run before ;-) ). I have had friends who have not been able to run for much longer because of stress fractures and other injuries and they basically bounce back pretty quick -- but taking it slow is the key. Ease back, don't just expect it to happen right away - this is advise based on just not being running/swiming for a few weeks, not from the hysterectomy.
With respect to "how it feels", likely due to hysterectomy -- running is probably much different than swimming (abdominal muscles play a much bigger role in swimming I would imagine - not to mention running being more "jarring"). I am a little sore when I run (and right afterward), but have not had "numbness" you describe (could it be from your inscision - that I don't have?). What I said this morning after my run: "the only thing worse than my run this morning was not running". My hope is that within 6 weeks I will be functioning at the level I was before my surgery -- that is what I have heard, so we shall see! I am just grateful to be running again - and the weather is wonderful!
Good luck ladies.
(Joeyanne - feel to PM me and we can discuss the running part)
