LIW 6/26 surgery and Scared of No Smoking and Pain Management

I am so very glad to have this website to post my concerns and fears and to then know that others have experienced them as well. So here it goes, vent time. I experienced nausea on my last surgery and I am seriously considering the epideral for this one. I am very concerned that they won't give me anything to sleep comfortably with it or anything to make me not want to smoke while in the castle. (There I just told the truth as to why I don't want the epideral). I am a horrible baby when it comes to my cigarrettes. I don't want to be able to go through nicotine withdrawal.

I also am worried about the pain management option of the PCA with morphine an option around the epideral.

Please give me some pointers and some reassurance. Starting my liquid diet today and my pre-op bowel prep.

Thanks for sending me your

Hi Bev,

WOW - I just realized that your surgery is tomorrow morning. Be sure to let the anesthesiologist know about your concerns about becoming nauseous. In my case, I had general anesthesia with my hyst and didn't have any nausea at all - they put an anti-nausea drug in my IV, and it worked great.

You'll probably need to talk to your doctor about what kind of post-op pain relief he is going to order for you, and please don't be embarrassed to tell him that you don't want to be awake and craving a cigarette. That's a very valid concern. I did have the morphine PCA pump, which I liked very much. My DD and DH tell me that I never let the little button out of my fist, but I don't remember being in any serious pain at all, so it must have worked for me.

I hope you'll see this before you leave for the hospital in the morning. You'll be in my thoughts and prayers. Please let us know how you are doing when you've been back home a couple of days.

Nausea & Smokes

To be honest with you, I had vey little nausea after anesthesia and when I did then hung a bag of anti-nausea meds immediately...never did throw up. And as far as cigs, I brought nic patches with me to the hosp and never used one...didn't even have a craving for one until the last day in hosp and really itching to go home...I was shocked...but I didn't even want a cig...Think about bringing patches to the hosp w/you

I got sick with general in the past and had a spinal and epidural for post op pain. It was the best. I did get some nausea but zofran through the I.V. in time prevented me from losing my first solid meal that I really enjoyed. You can ask your dr. about a patch. I think I've seen before where liw took nic patches with them. For some it meant they were quitting all together for better health. Here is a link about anesthesia. https://www.hystersisters.com/vb2/sho...light=epidural Good luck to you.
