Pre op today and now MORE CONFUSED!
Had my preop today, first appt was with my surgeon then off to the hospital for the bloodwork etc.
I am adamant about having this performed laprascopically. Now she did say that she has had only one conversion in the last six months to abdominal, and although it rarely happens, that I need to be prepared that it just might happen.
Now here is my dilema....I am planning on a total lap hyst with keeping ovaries and tubes. I told her how strongly I feel about not having an abdominal hyst and she basically gave me this choice. She asked, if it comes down to it, if she can only perform a LSH safely, am I okay with keeping my cervix? Apparently there is a slightly higher chance of conversion with the TLH. If I really want my cervix removed and she absolutely cannot with the TLH, then am I agreeable to the TAH??
This is, of course, after attempting a vaginal as a second option if she does run into problems.
She told me that my hospital is a leading teaching hospital that specializes in minimally invasive surgeries and she will do everything to keep my hyst a TLH.
I guess I am now anxious that I just might wake up with a TAH and I am freaking out here!
I am self employed and CANNOT afford more than the two weeks time off that I have planned for. No way, no how!
UUUghhh!!! I am not sleeping as it is as my surgery is approaching soon and now I have THIS to dwell on!!
Well, in the end, as much as I want my cervix GONE, I told her if it mean't keeping my surgery a lap then to leave it if she must. BUT to cauterize the **** out of it as I do not want to end up with any period whatsoever, no matter how light, after all of this.
She must think I am a total nutcase as I walked in there with pages of questions, research printed off the internet, and my request that I wanted to see my poor uterus afterwards. I mean it 'housed' my babies after all! She said they can't just keep it 'lying around' but that she can try and take a picture of it for me.
Sorry for the ramble, I am just upset that I may not get my surgery 'of choice' in the end.
ANy sisters wake up to an abdominal after going in for either a lap or vaginal hyst???
Thanks for listening (reading rather) my long winded rambling. I hope I made sense.

Hi Mary....thanks for replying. May I ask if you had adeno/fibroids and if so, did it create any problems with keeping your hyst a lap?
Thanks.

Pre op today and now MORE CONFUSED!
Hi Cindy,
I had fibroids at the time of my LSH. I had just finished (3) months of lupron shots to shrink my uterus with fibroids from 15 cm to 9.1 cm, so I was a more managable size for my Dr. during surgery. I did ask my Dr. at my pre-op whether he thought he would need to convert to an abdominal and he said no. And as I replied earlier, I still had some what ifs?? going into surgery.
I am 3 yrs post-op now and I have seen several Lap Hyster Sisters with a uterus size larger than mine at the time of their surgery and they had successful lap surgeries. In my opinion, it comes down to a Dr's medical training, a Hyster Sister's medical history *and* the size of the uterus. All can be factors.
Sending best wishes again~

I also went to a top teaching hospital. I had aTLH. I had some concerns about a conversion. My dr. was pretty confident and told me not to worry, because he very rarely does a conversion. He also reminded me if he converted then it was absolutely neccessary. I went into surgery praying for God's will. Everything went according to plan. If there would have been complications I would have been okay with whatever the dr. decided. I had to come to terms with that before surgery.
Good luck and let us know how everything goes.

Cindy,
I think maybe your doctor is preparing you, in case things don't go as planned. When you sign the consent form for the surgery, they list all kinds of "ifs" - it is mostly a legal thing - but also to give you a chance to prepare.
If a conversion is needed to save your life and improve your health, your doctor will do what is best for you.
I am not sure that 2 weeks is enough time for recovery before you go back to work either way. Ask other Sisters that had LSH what they think. Don't push yourself and take the needed time for your body to heal.

Pre op today and now MORE CONFUSED!
I has a LSH on 4/2 had post op on 4/16. Dr said I could go back to work unrestricted (desk job) I chose to take another 2 weeks off just to relax and enjoy. Could I physically, emotionally, and mentally handle going back to work at 2 weeks post op? YES, feel great. Only issue is rebuilding my stamina, used to be able to go go go, now I want that afternoon nap. As far as telling you they may have to change to an abdominal I think is just customary a just in case if you will or worst case scenario. I went in knowing I was keeping my cervix. Good luck on your upcoming trip to the castle.

Good luck with the going back to work in 2 weeks. I know some women do it with ease but I was not one of them. It took me 2 weeks just to feel human again. I went back at 4 weeks and wish I would have stayed out for 6 weeks. However, I did develop a vaginal cuff infection at 3 weeks and my job has me driving and moving around alot.

Hi Serenedee,
I went back to work 2 weeks after my LSH, with my Dr's okay. I just walked a little slower, I delegated a lot and I took breaks when I needed them.
Sending best wishes~
