how do i know if my one ovary will wake up aft. surgery
Good luck next week.. I will let you know about your ovary question. I am having my tah tomorrow 10/29 and it looks like he is going to leave my left ovary in. My Dr. didn't mention anything about hrt. I am not a candidate for any type of hormone, but I think he would have mentioned it anyway. I am more concerned about my bowel and bladder waking up. I read somewhere that they go into "Sleep" mode.. I have no idea what that really means, but I hope I am able to poop.. My mom says that they wont let you leave the castle unless you can show them the gift of poop.. The thought of sitting on a strange toilet with a nurse waiting for a package is giving me the creeps.. Today is going to be brutal.. I just wish I could go to sleep now, and wake up on Thursday all set up on my couch... LOL.. It looks like I should be home on Thursday, so look for me then. I will share your concerns with my Dr. and hopefully he will give me the information that you are looking for...

Aw ladies don't fret, it's not that bad... as far as the poop goes, generally you can be released after you've passed gas... most of us don't have our first bm until several days later, at home. You can help things along post op by drinking lots of fluids and taking a stool softener like colace (they will most likely start giving you one with every meal at the castle, if they don't, ask them about it because it helps), and also taking lots of little walks when you're up to it.
About the ovary, you probably won't know right away. Depending on how much "belly fat" (sorry, don't mean to be insulting or anything, but that's where your body likes to store estrogen) you have, it takes a little time for you to use up whatever stored reserves you might have. Then if your ovary isn't working yet you'll start having hot flashes and night sweats and such... and it would be great if you had something on hand to treat them if/when that happens (either HRT or something like black cohosh if you can't take HRT). This would be an excellent thing to discuss with your DR either before the surgery or before you're released from the castle, if he/she hasn't brought it up before then. Or, you might get lucky and your ovary might be working right away, you never know.
Good luck to both of you, I'll look for you over in Post Op!
s,
-Linda

My surgery (TVH) was on Oct. 11th. My doctor told me he would leave my ovaries if possible, but as it turned out the left one had to be removed. As far as the remaining one, so far so good. I haven't had any hot flashes or night sweats. Of course after reading Surferbabe's explanation, it could be because of all the belly fat that I am "blessed" with, LOL! I guess everyone is a little different and we just have to relax and hope for the best. Good luck with your surgery, I'm sure you'll do fine.
