Consider checking out your physician!!!
Greetings all,
I was originally scheduled for my hyst on Dec. 23rd. For some reason, while I was at peace about the surgery (TAH + ovaries), I was still a little anxious about it all. A small voice kept telling me that I should check out my physician's surgical outcomes. When I asked a case manager that works in the gyn surgery dept at my hospital she told me, in a round about way - professional courtesy and all, that my doc had among the worst hyst outcomes in the hospital - more infections, longer stays, more surgery rework, etc. I was horrified. It was less than a week before my scheduled surgery - what was I going to do. I had planned this procedure for this time minimize time away from work, and had friends and family traveling in to help me during the recovery.
Well, after checking a few other sources, the commentary I heard on my doc continued to be consistent. I cancelled with my original doctor and a friend was able to get into see her doc, an infertility specialist, who agreed to do the surgery on Dec 26th. When I told him my story he, confirmed that his office REFUSES to send any patients to my original doctor and he was glad that I trusted my judgment moved where I felt more comfortable.
I am doing much better than average and am very glad to have checked out my original physician's outcomes. There was nothing negative in the state records about his performance. However, when I talked to the nurses and case managers in the wards where the gyn post-op patients are, I got an earful. When I made my inquires, I was very clear that I did not care about bedside manner - only clinical outcomes and I got very good information.
This is critical surgery. I am now a huge advocate for doing research on your doctor's "surgical outcomes" with the nurses who work the gyn post-op wards. No one knows better than they do because they care for all of the physicians’ patients so they know whose patients do well and whose patients do less well. Your insurance company also keeps files which are usually available for your review on physician outcomes. Even with he best of practitioners, things can/do go wrong. I found it invaluable to me to do some digging.
Good luck to those of you who are about to go through this process. Remember to listen carefully to your gut.
Thanks to all the women on this board who answered my questions and helped me have peace of mind.

Very interesting
That's a very interesting story. Congratulations to you for listening to your inner voice. You must have sensed something about that guy. I am going to have surgery for a hernia (as a result of my hysterectomy) and have chosen a surgeon based on reports from nurses who work with him. Not a SINGLE one has anything bad to say about him and all say they would choose him as their surgeon. He was not the first surgeon I was referred to. I have great respect for the opinion of nurses.

Consider checking out your physician!!!
Absolutely right on checking out your doctor.
I am lucky that both my sister and a close friend are nurses and work with all the OB/Gyns and know who is best at what.
Gotta ask the nurses. They are the ones that deal with the "bad outcomes". Around here, you could not get one doctor to talk badly about another. Just doesn't happen.
Take care.
