How Long????
How long has everyone been doing the HRT? I had a TAH back in Nov. of 2002. So I am coming up on 9 years of being on the vivelle dot. Also am on synthroid. So is there a time limit? My gyno dr. doesn't say anything about coming off of it, but my general practicianer does. So I am just curious, how long has everyone been using HRT? Margo

Re: How Long????
Hi Margo!
I've been using hormone therapy for over 9 years now and I don't have any plans to ever stop using it unless there's some compelling medical reason for me to stop. Happily, my doctor is perfectly fine with that.
Even after menopause the ovaries produce beneficial hormones and since we have no ovaries, it seems like a good idea to replace some of what we would have if we had kept the ovaries.

Re: How Long????
Hi April Dawn,, thanks for responding to my question. The reason I ask it is because of something I saw on tv the other morning. I was watching the Today show and their Dr. Nancy Snyderman (she is the Today shows medical coraspondant) came on and someone ask a question about hormones. She said no one should stay on them longer than 5 years. So I was just wondering if I should start weening myself off the estrogen. And just how long everyone was thinking of taking their HRT. So thanks again. Margo

Re: How Long????
Great question. I've only just begun my journey on hrt. I'm on vivelle dot to,but wondered how lomg I would be on. I know I will be on for many years as I'm 37,but thought after certain age I should wean off. Good to know I might be on this forever. At least it won't be a suprise.

Re: How Long????
AAAAUUUUGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!
Here we go again scaring people with the "five years and no longer" crap. That rather artificial limit is a guideline for women in NATURAL menopause who, as April Dawn pointed out, still have ovaries that are producing some estrogen. In that case, women who use hrt to smooth out the rough edges until their bodies settle down should look at trying to reduce or eliminate their hrt. I would also add that these women would be on an hrt which includes a progestin, since they still have their uteruses (uteri ?), and the progestins seem to be the troublemakers as far as bad effects go.
That said, I plan to be on my estrogen until I no longer need it, which could be five years, ten years, twenty years, or never. I'm sure I'll be able to reduce the dose somewhat as I age (I have already, a little), but fortunately my Dr does understand the difference between surgical and natural menopause and won't be pushing me to drop it completely.

Re: How Long????
(((Margo))), I've heard the "no longer than 5 years" plan too, but only for women who still have their ovaries.
I am a fan of the lowest dose possible to control symptoms. I should have mentioned that I do go annually for a mammogram, breast and pelvic exams and I still have a Pap (vaginal vault smear) done. So far, so good!
Always discuss your concerns with your own doctor.

Re: How Long????
((AprilDawn)) thanks for the input. I was just wondering about the length that eveyone had been on them and if they ever thought of getting off of them. I am on the divigel and synthroid and don't plan of stopping them anytime soon. I too go for annual mammograms (since I was 35 now 54) and all the other checkups. Thanks again Margo

Re: How Long????
FOR LIFE and if you try to make me stop, you won't like what happens!
I agree, the end time limit is for those in "natural menopause" not surgical menopause. Remember, women in natural menopause STILL produce up to 40% of the hormone amount they produced pre-menopause.
We make NONE with no ovaries. So, for life... and if my dr tries to wean me off, I will find another dr who is more familiar with surgical menopause.

Re: How Long????
Thanks everyone for responding. I had never read or heard about surgical menopause women staying on HRT forever. But I guess it does make sense. ((Maddie sorry if I upset you with my question, but it never crossed my mind that this was a permement thing HRT)) So now I will just go on doing the Divigel. I do feel pretty good on it. Was on the Vivelle dot for roughly 8 years and I think I just stopped absorbing it very well. I put the Divigel on my inner arms between my wrists and elbow. Does anyone think I am doing any harm putting it there? I know the pamphlet says to put it on your thighs and I did at first, but I feel so much more engergized when I put it on my arms. So thanks again and I will never think about stopping again. Margo
