Re: Acute Pelvic Pain post ablation
I too believe I have Post Ablation Tubal Sterilization Syndrome.
I'm new here, 42, married, have no bio-kids (1 adopted) and I'm in pain. I had a tubal in 2003 and an ablation in 2005.
For the last two years or so, I have been using Percocet occasionally to alleviate very painful menstrual cramping. The past two months, on top of the "normal" cramping, I've had horrible pain on my left side which does not fully go away.
I've recently had an ultrasound, which found a small fibroid, a blocked cervix and fluid built-up in my uterus. I am currently coping (not very well though) with the pain via Percocet, Vicodin and heating pads. On the 23rd I go in for a hysteroscopy (if they can get my cervix open) and a laparoscopy. I am waiting for the hysteroscopy and laparoscopy results before deciding on anything further.
My doctor had recommended a hysterectomy two years ago, but I opted to wait, using drugs to deal with pain. Since I've never had bio-kids, he says he'd want to do an abdominal hysterectomy, hopefully leaving my ovaries.
I'm afraid that my current path is only leading towards hysterectomy and am nervous about having such major surgery and the recovery.

Re: Acute Pelvic Pain post ablation
I feel for you. I could not take percocet. It exacerbated my pain, causing me to vomit. Because I normally vomit with severe pain, it was hard to decipher what was causing all the trouble. Additionally, other narcotic meds tended to cause extreme itching, but I tolerated that in order to have pain relieved. I understand your hesitation in finally getting a hysterectomy, but I wouldn't be surprised to find that you find it will be what is necessary. As I mentioned, I was obnoxiously against hysterectomy, and although I am not happy to have lost an organ, regardless of how useless it might be at this stage in my life, I do believe it changed my life. I still have some pain, however, that may be related to sciatica. I think that the menstrual pain used to exacerbate a bad sciatic nerve, so that pain still comes on once in a while. The ovary does have a cyst, but I think my aforementioned homeopathic regime is helping somewhat. My blood tests suggest I am no perimenopausal; my symptoms and feelings, esp hot flashes, suggest otherwise.
I have never heard of a blocked cervix, but based upon my previous pain, I would think that it would cause a lot of pain. I have an incredible pain tolerance, but when my cycle came about, I understood why people got addicted to drugs and I understood that I sometimes took too many pain pills without caring what might happen. It was terrible.
Good luck to you. Abdominal surgery was not bad at all. I was in good shape weight wise--not an exerciser or cardio person but very active, type a person.

Re: Acute Pelvic Pain post ablation
Thanks hoosierlady. My hysteroscopy, lap and D&C have been moved to tomorrow. I couldn't take the pain anymore and begged to be moved up. At this point, I'm sure I'm headed for the hysterectomy, but if it stops the pain I'd be so grateful.

Re: Acute Pelvic Pain post ablation
For the past few months I have been having what seems like cyclic pain. I am 13 months post Thermachoice ablation. At the end of May, after a year of no periods/bleeding, I began to have very dark brown thick discharge. After a few days, I had a "gush" of the same type stuff, but with lots of mucous. A week later I saw my GYN while still having the mucousy blood. My GYN feels this is post ablation/sterilization syndrome and ordered an ultrasound on the 16th of July. Once I left his office, the bleeding grew heavier, turned from brown to bright red and I have been using 6-7 super tampons most days. It'll stop for a few hours and then start right back up again. I wonder if my fallopian tube might be rupturing but I am familiar with those symptoms and I haven't had any that make me nervous yet. I am in a fair amount of pain. I usually tolerate pain well but I am not getting much relief from OTC meds. My GYN asked me to consider the possibility of hysterectomy being the next step. Before the ablation I had hoped to keep my uterus for as long as possible but as time goes on, I can envision a life without it. I also have a rectocele that will need repair before too long because it's becoming more and more uncomfortable. We'll see what happens in July, if not before.

Re: Acute Pelvic Pain post ablation
Really glad I found this site. I honestly had not put two and two together that my abdominal pain might the result of my ablation.
I had a tubal ligation in 1998. In 2009 (ten months ago), I had a Novasure ablation. It went fine. To the point where I had very little discharge afterward. Haven't had a period since last August 13th -- but every month, I do get PMS and breast tenderness.
Well, for about the last three or four months, I am having pain on my left side, and I thought it was an ovarian cyst. Now I am wondering if it's related to my ablation. There have been times that if the pain was on the right side, I'd swear I had appendicitis. It comes and goes, but never goes away for good. It's usually a nagging pain - not debilitating, but definitely noticeable.
I have an appointment for my annual on July 15. Now I wonder if I should wait that long to go in.
Thanks for listening ... glad I'm not alone.

Re: Acute Pelvic Pain post ablation
I had my exploratory surgery on the 16th. On top of the fibroid, blocked cervix and trapped fluid, my doc says I have scarring and inflammation on the exterior left side of my uterus and he suspects adenomyosis inside, which I had never heard of. It's deterioration of the uterine wall caused by endometrial tissue working its way into the muscle. The scarring, inflammation he suspects is from the tubal, the blocked cervix, fluid build up and adenomyosis from the ablation.
The pain hasn't stopped a bit, so I am still taking the percocet and vicodin to make it through the day. Sitting upright is horrible.
Seeing the doc to discuss hysterectomy on the 30th. At this point I just want the pain to stop.
I wouldn’t wait to see your doc if you can help it. In my case, the pain is only getting worse.
Give me an update when you can...Good Luck.

Re: Acute Pelvic Pain post ablation
Makes one wonder about the advisability of ablations, huh? I thought that procedure would be perfect, but it seems it may not be as promising for everyone as it appears to be. I would seriously advise all those considering ablation to research the possibility of these kinds of complications/eventualities that we describe in these posts. I am sure some people have outstanding results with ablations, but it sure is nice to know that things might seem great after a while, only to turn into debilitating pain. If not for this forum, I would not have suspected post ablation problems.

Re: Acute Pelvic Pain post ablation
You said it, Hoosierlady. No one EVER mentioned the possibility of issues related to having a tubal and an ablation. As far as my doctor was concerned, the ablation was the best thing since sliced bread and he does tons of them. I'd like to know how many people end up going back. I still don't know if mine is ablation-related or cysts, or what, but I'm going to find out soon. I just think if it was cysts, it wouldn't have gone on for three or so months, but I don't know for sure. I think I need to get in before my July 15th appointment.

Re: Acute Pelvic Pain post ablation
Keep in mind, there are pros and cons to all procedures, including a hysterectomy. While most women do fine after a tubal, and most women do fine after an ablation, and most women do fine after a hysterectomy, not all of us have those happily ever after experiences that lead doctors and women to recommend the various procedures.
The same is true of any procedure, not just gynecological. For instance, gaving my wisdom teeth out went well. On the other hand, it was horrible experience for my best friend.
I though my hysterectomy would go well. My mom's, my grandmothers, and my aunt's had. Ha! Not mine!
Hence, it is very important that we all seek second opinions before any non-emergency surgery. In fact, the negative outcomes that have occurred when ladies have not sought a second opinion is one of the reasons Kathy Kelley, the owner and founder of HysterSisters, has launched a new project: www.GiveMeASecond.com. You can also find info about it in the News Section.

Re: Acute Pelvic Pain post ablation
This GYN is actually my third opinion. I have debated and put off the hysterectomy for years. I have bled uncontrollably, with ER visits and being homebound for most of my menstrual life. The only up side to having kept it was that my husband and I decided to have another child, which ended in a 15 week premature birth (25 weeks gestation). Now 1 year post ablation I am in a considerable amount of pain and discomfort again. Frankly, I don't like it. Having to take medication around the clock for pain is not how I want to live my life. I have a high threshold and this is gnawing at it. My uterus and I have had a good run aside from it's angry nature. It has produced 2 wonderful children and I feel that soon it will be time for us to part ways.
