Hi, new here
Hi, I am new here. I want to say hello to everyone. I just had my hysterectomy Feb 21st, I had a total abdominal hysterectomy and BSO. I have some questions if anyone could help me out. I was wondering about incision swelling? How long that lasts? I recieved no post op instructions except don't drive if on pain meds and keep incision dry, thats it, no restrictions or anything. I had to ask about lifting and she said no lifting over 5 pounds for 6 weeks. I have stairs in my house and I been using them, I was not told anything else about what I can and can't do. My incision swells, and I was wondering how long that lasts? I am on vivelle dot patch, 0.1mg, and am doing great with the patch. I am 37 years old, I had the hysterectomy for adenomyosis, I had heavy irregular bleeding and pain. Thank you

Hi, new here
Is the swelling actually on the incision or around it... Most of us have the swelling.. (therefore the term swelly belly) I am almost at 6 wks (tomorrow) and could easily pass for 3 months preg. And that is with lots of rest. You willl find by the end of the day the swelling gets worse, esp. if you are up all day. I would say don't overdo on the stairs as that uses abdominal muscles. you are only a couple of weeks into your recovery and there are many internal stitches that you do not want to disturb. Be careful with bending down... Try to get your pots and pans where you can easily reach them... 5 lbs is not a lot... (A gallon of milk weighs more than that) so try to keep that in mind. If your incision is red and swollen, you may want to check with your doctor

Hi, new here
Hi and thank you. My incision looks great but the incision itself swells, I also have the swollen belly. My incision sticks out when I stand because it swells. My doc said that was normal, but I wanted to know if this happened to anyone else. Thanks for the tips to.

Hi, new here
Hello and welcome....I am new here too as of yesterday. Yes I have had the swelling at night. Cannot wear most of my clothes right now. Doctor says that will go away???? Incisions are itchy too. Holy moly I rubbed into a chair by accident yesterday and I think that I felt every nerve ending in my body. I guess that time will take care of all of that.

Hi, new here
I joined yesterday, too (at 5 weeks post-op), and have found this site to be very informative and helpful! Keep reading!!!
As for the swelling, it happens - remember you just had surgery. ;-) The itching goes away, too. About those nerve endings...the only way I could describe it to someone else is that the nerve endings that "used to shake hands with each other are still searching for the hand they used to shake". Once they find their "buddy", they get much friendlier and the irritation subsides. I hope that made sense.
The only annoyance I experience now is the zipper from my pants rubbing against the incision point. The Dr suggested I just make sure my shirt is tucked in comfortably.
Good luck to all of you!!! Trust me, it does get better!
Julia

Hi, new here
Oh, I forgot one other thing associated with post-op instructions. My Dr recommended Mederma or Neosporin to reduce scar visability (no laying out in the sun in a bikini unless you really like seeing the scar), but you need to make sure the external incision is closed before using. I'll be picking some up today after I go into work for a bit...
