TAH on Tuesday - No Finger Nails Left, Really Stressed
Hi.
I have waited so long for this surgery and now when it is finally confirmed I am so nervous. I have literally bitten off every finger nail that I have. Scared, stressed, anxiety...a few emotions to say the least.
Wondering if I should cancel? My husband is not here to help me decide. He is at work and I am home recovering from sinusitis which the doctor gave me medical clearance from this morning.
What should I do?
Thanks,
Lisa

Re: TAH on Tuesday - No Finger Nails Left, Really Stressed
I am six weeks out from a hysterectomy and I remember how scared I was. It is natural to be everything that you are, but trust me when I say you will be so happy when it is all over. My husband did not help me make the decision to do the surgery he just said it was up to me. I am very happy with my decision.
Mine was done due to AUB, enlarged uterus and fibroids. I feel 100% better and I am not totally healed. I am release from my doctor, but since they did it abdiminally my muscles are still healing. I just want you to know that recovery is not near as hard as I expected it to be.
Hold your head high it will be a good thing.
My God Bless you and Keep you!!

Re: TAH on Tuesday - No Finger Nails Left, Really Stressed
Hi Lisa,
All the stress is normal. I was a mess before my surgery. I was second guessing myself until I feel asleep in the operating room. I am now almost 5 weeks out and loving life. I did not relize how much AF and endo was affecting my life. I took a year and half to decide to do the surgery but it was the best decision for me. You are the only one who can say yes to this surgery. Your family and friends will be a big part in your recovery but the decision is yours. I assume you have discussed all aspects of your surgery with your doctor and you both agreed. If something feels wrong then get a second opinon if it would help you ease your mind. I have found mountians of great advice on this site and hope you will as well. Good luck!!

Hi Lisa! I do understand all the anxiety, it's completely natural. That's what makes us human and is there to be self-protection for us in the face of something scary.
Only you, your doctor and God know what's best for you but try not to let the anxiety change your mind. Base your decision on facts and health issues and guidance from above.
We are here to support you, take care of yourself.

Re: TAH on Tuesday - No Finger Nails Left, Really Stressed
I had a TVH, BSO, AP repair and bladder sling on 01/12/10, but had it scheduled since July. I never got nervous or anxious until January hit and then I realized I was about to undergo major surgery (having the doctor's office try to change my surgery date 3 times -- which was originally scheduled for 01/07/10 -- didn't help either). They gave me some medication for the anxiety before taking me to surgery even though I never said a word about being nervous or anxious (guess they figured most women are), and I was grateful. I am extremely happy that I had this done. I had ablation therapy in 2002 and hadn't had periods, but had 3rd degree prolapse of uterus and bladder. I never realized how bad I felt (even though I didn't have periods I still had symptoms) until I was out of surgery. I am waiting to see how I feel over the next month, and hoping the headaches are gone. I feel so much "lighter." Best of luck.

Re: TAH on Tuesday - No Finger Nails Left, Really Stressed
Hi Lisa - I am 6 weeks post op. I was stressed to the max right before my TAH. The morning of my surgery my blood pressure was sky high and I had the nurses in shear panic. All went well and I would do it all over again if I had to. The recovery has been much easier than I expected. I'm pretty much back to normal (exercising, working, traveling, etc.). I do get tired easily so I just have to stop and rest for a while and then hit it again. Best of luck to you. Hang in there.

Re: TAH on Tuesday - No Finger Nails Left, Really Stressed
You are very normal and I don't know what to advise you either. I had LAVH on 12/28. I was fine when I set the surgery date, but then the nerves started in on me. My husband only told me that as he saw it, I had two choices, either have it done or don't. A lot of help he was. I struggled with, did I need this or not, even though I am 61 yrs old and had post menopausal bleeding. Was I doing the right thing or not? I knew that I should not be spotting/bleeding at my age. I was worried about uterine cancer everytime I would spot/bleed that had been going on for many years. I told the little young nurse I was going to run away, and she told me she would just have to come after me. Well, I had it done, scared to death all the way to the operating room. Now that it is over, I am glad to be free of the worry about the uterine cancer scare.
Maybe talk to your doctor again and make sure that you have all of the information to make your decision. You have to trust your doctor also to have your best interest in this decision, and I am sure he/she does.
Good Luck to you in making your decision. I still think your nerves are normal and that you will be glad after it is all over with, if that is what you decide. I felt very foolish for all of my nerves when it was over.

Re: TAH on Tuesday - No Finger Nails Left, Really Stressed
Hi Lisa,
I am 5 weeks post-op from my TAH and can tell you that for me, it was a good decision. I had fibriods and cysts and during surgery, found endo. I could have chosen other options but knew that I would eventually have to have a hysterectomy.
Prior to my TAH, I had never been hospitalized and wasn't on any medication. The most nerve-racking thing for me was the anxiety over the hospitalization. Happy to report that all went very well.....everyone I encountered was very nice, attentive and knowledgable.
You will be great!
