should I be worried about pelvic organ prolapse??

I've been doing a bit too much researching on the web and I have read about Pelvic Organ Prolapse. I should have researched more before my surgery. My doc took my cervix and left both ovaries. Should I be concerned?? Is that a common thing? Thanks for any info!:

Re: should I be worried about pelvic organ prolapse??

When I asked about activities and the chance of prolapses, my surgeon told me that most people who have prolapses are people who have issues before the hysterectomy, not after. So if you had no issues before, chances are that you will be okay. Keep doing your Kegels to reinforce your pelvic floor just to make sure you will be okay. That is what I am doing.

You're lucky you kept your cervix. I had adenomyosis and so the doctor probably thought it best to remove it. Thanks for your response!! Gosh, it helps to not feel alone in this journey!

Re: should I be worried about pelvic organ prolapse??

Mich, there is no proof that keeping your cervix helps prevent prolapses. As a matter of fact, they are doing a study right now to figure that one out. I chose to keep my cervix and ovaries because I wanted the minimum amount of work done inside me. There are negatives to keeping the cervix, however, (touch wood) so far I haven't had any issues such as mini-periods or bad pap smears and being in perimenopause, I hope I won't be producing too much estrogen to grow more fibroids which can happen on the cervix as it is also part of the uterus.

Danni,
Yes, I had a problem with fibroids I didn't know that prolapses can happen even with your cervix. Forgive my ignorance!! I like what you said about people mainly have problems if they already were having some issues!! Yay!!
Thanks so much

Re: should I be worried about pelvic organ prolapse??

I asked my doc about prolapse as well. Ok, so I KNOW there's lots of studies going on about it. but I've got an old grey-haired doc who has delivered a million babies... He said in his experience, prolapse is caused by carrying 10 lb babies... not hysterectomy.

My doc feels this is one of the reasons to obey the lifting rules post surgery, he feels that it can contribute to improper healing and pelvic floor dysfunction.
