NOT HAPPY with new GYN :( (update on me)

OK, here's my story...

I have been bleeding off and on(mostly on) for the past going on three months now.
Large, no, HUGE clots at times, lots of flooding episodes...then watery pink for days, then I go thru about a week or week and a half of the horrible thing...to the point of anemia.

We were suppose to go on vacation this week and the hurricanes down near Florida have put a damper on that and so did my news at the GYN.

I went to a new one(I switched due to insurance problems and I didn't like the way my other gyn handled my stillbirth of my baby in September 2003.
So this doctor I went to, she is literally a new doctor. This is her first practice.

Now, seeing my history...I had a d&c in 1998 and it came back benign endometrial hyperplasia..put on Prometrium 400mg a day to control( I was heavier back then by about 30 pounds so I required that much). OK, I was on this until July of 2002 when I went on a big weight loss plan and lost 100 pounds! I got to go off it because of the weight loss it just made my hormones go back to normal. THen in May of 2003 was when I became pregnant. I put on 30 pounds during the pregnancy and I've put on 30 more since September.
Now, I'm not huge by any means. I mean, if I lost about 40 pounds I'd be down to a size 10, right now I'm a 14 to 16. That being said this is what the new doctor told me....(my other doctor would not have done this by the way).

Re: endometrial biopsy- there wasn't enough tissue for them to use to find out the problem. It only came back blood tissue and clot type tisse
Re: my ultrasound- My uterine lining is thickened and my paraovarian cyst that I've had for about 2 1/2 years(I had the cancer screen a year and half ago and it came back negative) the cyst has grown about 1 cm in a year.
She "thinks" my pap was normal but they couldn't find the report yesterday.

Now, here's what she said about all of this( I do have history of hypertension which is controlled by 1/2 a blood pressure pill a day)

Quotes from her: I need to do a D&C and hysteroscopy to find out what that uterine lining is because we didn't get enough tissure.
The cyst next to your right ovary has grown some, but I wouldn't do cutting surgery on you unless you lost weight. I couldn't live with myself if something happened to you by you being overweight.

Well, I was appalled. I mean, women who are a LOT bigger than me have hysterectomies everyday and surgery everyday. WOmen with a LOT more health problems than hypertension and somewhat overweight. I don't consider a size 14 to 16 being humungous or anything.

I felt like crap when I left. She didn't want to give me any Prometrium , I told her that's probably what I needed that Idon't produce enough progesterine on my own when I'm overweight and that I probably do have hyperplasia. I almost had to beg for the Prometrium and then she only gave me 100mg(which won't touch it for me) but luckily they gave me two sample boxes so I can take two a day for 200mg.

OH and she won't do the D&C until I have surgical clearance from my medical doctor, which I can't see until Sept 8th!!!

I feel that she's too paranoid and new and maybe I shouldn't have switched because my other gyn md never had a problem with getting enough tissue for a sample and he also would have gone ahead with the d&c right away and never made me wait.

Now I'm really upset....does anyone have any advice???

NOT HAPPY with new GYN :( (update on me)

You might want to consider another opinion. Do you have any women friends who are happy with their doctors? You might even want to call the local hospital and ask the nurses in OB/GYN who they would want as a doctor if they needed a procedure.

Good luck.

Another new gyn

Like Cat suggested, I called the local hospital and talked with the nurses and secretary on the GYN surgery floor and they recommended a good doctor with lots of experience and so I have an appt with him the week after we get back from vacation(hopefully we'll get to go). The girl at that office listened to my whole story and she told me if I had any problems before then that I could call and they would work me in to be seen.
I had already heard good things about him from a friend I used to work with. He delivered all her babies and she had lots of health problems.
The lady I talked with at the office said she had high blood pressure and they did a hysterectomy on her, so she didn't understand the problem.

I am in good health all but the bleeding. Like I said , my bp is controlled with a low-dose med.

She made me feel a LOT better. I'm going to try to get in to see my normal md before that appt.

Please keep me in your prayers. I took my first prometrium today.

Love,
Ginger

NOT HAPPY with new GYN :( (update on me)

Hi Ginger,

Okay...this is only my opinion....but I would run not walk to a 3rd opinion.

Your Dr. sounds like a real "newbie" Dr. She couldn't find your pap smear result?? Okay...well where is it?? Who knows?? If she can't find paperwork in her office, how does she do with gyneo procedures and hyst surgeries?? I would be wondering.

And then making a comment about your weight and it was your 1st appointment with her?? How rrr....ude!!! I used to be a size 22 and I am now a size 10. And I "know" the feelings I have had about my weight in the past. I understand that.

Big question for me would be, did you feel trust with this new Dr.??

Sounds like what you want is some qualified decison making by a Dr. with some experience under their belt.

Good luck. The decision making can be the hardest part of the process.

We Hyster Sisters are here to help if we can.

NOT HAPPY with new GYN :( (update on me)

Thank you both so much

As you could see by my new post, I am going to that second opinion.

I did not feel confident in her. I mean, there are many more women a lot heavier than I am that have to have hysterectomies or D&C's.

I called up to they GYN surgery floor at the hospital and talked with the nurses and secretaries and they told me of a physician who was very good and experienced. I had heard about him before.
When I called they were so nice to me. I told them whole story. They made me an appt for the week after I get back and then they told me if I had a bad problem before them to call and they would work me in.

I pray this helps.

Thank you all so much.

Love,
Ginger

NOT HAPPY with new GYN :( (update on me)

Hi Ginger

I'm so glad you found a new doc for a 2nd opinion. It's so important to have a doctor who you can trust and feel comfortable with--- and 2nd or even 3rd opinions are important while going through this journey. I hope all goes well for you with the new Keep us posted on how it goes for you.

Still bleeding off and on...

Dear Friends,

Well, the low dose of Prometrium is just keeping that awful bleeding 12 hours a day, at bay. So at least that helped with the vacation we just got back from. At least I was able to swim in the ocean, I sure didn't want to be shark bait.

100 mg of Prometrium is all the other doctor gave me due to she didn't get enough tissue in the Endometrial biopsy so she was "afraid" to prescribe it not knowing what is in my uterus.

I go to the other NEW doctor on Friday. I'm hoping he'll either go ahead with the D&C or a hysterectomy. I can't stand this any longer. It is so unfair to bleed like this.

If he does the D&C maybe he'll get the results back quickly and put me on a higher dose of Prometrium. That still won't fix my paraovarian cyst.
It still needs to be out of there...of course if he wants to take it out at the same time as the D&C I'd rather just have the hysterectomy and get it all out at the same time.

BOO HOO

Love,
Ginger
