Delayed Allergic Response/LSH/7-24???

Hi ladies! You are my "fonts of all knowlege"...LOL.

I have two questions....one about possible "delayed" allergic reaction (hives and wheps) - the other about, well, cleaning your belly button! LOL

My LSH was 7-24...in hosp 23 hours. Throwing up 9 hours after surgery, twice, but no more.

Home...quit taking demerol on 8-1. Started feeling pretty good about day 9 or 10.

Sunday night, day 13 post op, 3 or 4 days after last demerol dose, I started with hives. I know this is too much info as they say, but they were HUGE, almost tennis sized whelps on my buttocks, backs of thighs, hairline, behind ears - and a few small ones on front of neck. I took TONS of benedryl, claritin and a big ol' sleeping pill. The meds just were not making a significant dent in the hives. When I woke up THIS mornin - my eyelid had hives and was swollen 1/2 shut and they had spread all down my arms inner and more in my hair, etc. Just AWFUL.

I do not know which anesthetics I was given during surgery - I'm going to find out tomorrow.

Have any of you ladies had a response this late in the game? I had to go to the ER this morning at 7:30 and get a prednisone iv drip - TONS more benedryl, pepcid iv, you name it. By mid afternoon MOST of the hives are gone...but I am VERY fearful that as the meds wear off it'll come back.

So...sorry so long winded but wanted to supply enough info. Anyone here have these issues?

Now....on a lighter (I hope) note...My belly button was a slight bit stinky - I just noticed - and I cleaned it with peroxide....it bubbled and fizzied - was that a bad idea?

HELP....egads, I need it. Gabi

Delayed Allergic Response/LSH/7-24???

The welts sound like a classic case of a drug allergic reaction. It usually takes about 2 weeks for a drug reaction to process through the body and reach the skin (some move quicker). Were you given an antibiotic? What you described sounds like what happened to me on Bactrim and Euthromycin. The problem for me was it took 2 years for the reaction to be diagnosed. I would be given the antibiotic for what ever, then 2 weeks later I would brake out in welts that were the size of baseballs. The Dr's kept saying I had herpies but all tests were negative.

Finally found a Dermatoligst that asked what I had eaten or taken 2 to 3 weeks before........Bactrim or Euthromycin.

Look at everything you took 2 to 3 weeks ago ad start eleminating, then put tha on your list of allergies.

Does your incision go through your naval, or not?

If your belly button is intact, use a Q tip dipped in a bit of baby oil (or vaseline) and give it a good cleaning. Don't dig in TOO far!

Delayed Allergic Response/LSH/7-24???

it sure does....i can see the stitches (I think that is a stitch anyway)! I had one in the naval and two kind of right on top of my old c-section scar.

I hope I didn't mess myself by putting the other stuff in there. And I was sooo afraid to go too deep I prob didn't go deep enough. Blah.
