Hysterectomy/oophorectomy and menopause issues
I am awaiting my appointment with GYN Onc but wanted to get more info here also. I had er/pr+ breast cancer which means that after surgery I won't be able to take HRT.
Any advice for dealing with surgical menopause symptoms without HRT, soy or flax? I'd like to be as prepared as possible.

I'm sorry to hear that you've had to deal with breast cancer. I had a TAH BSO. I am not on HRT because of family history of breast cancer.
I have not done anything with soy or flax. I've never been into herbal thing either because I have seasonal allergies and I'm concerned about what plants might be in the same family as the ones I'm allergic to.
So far at almost 9 weeks post-op I'm doing well. I have warm flushes - not really flashes. I have them about 5-10 times a day and they only last a minute or two. I'm on an antidepresant for panic attacks so that may keep me from having mood swings. I had one night of crying on day 9.
I have had trouble falling asleep but when I was able to do more physically that helped.
I had a good deal of brain fog the first week back to work ( week 6).
There are a fair number of women on this site who are not taking HRT. Everyone's different.
I wish you all the best.

I had a TAH and am not taking HRT either. My major problem is with my body temperature. Hot flashes give way to shivers, mostly at night. As bad as that can be, I don't think it's worth taking HRT. I got some Xanax from my neurologist for a completely unrelated reason and those help me sleep; not being able to sleep was the worst thing about the temperature shifts. But as I get farther from my surgery date I find that the hot flashes don't occur with as much frequency, so maybe over time they'll vanish.

I believe that soy has to be avoided as well. It mimics estrogen to much for those that have to deal with cancer. I've seen it stated more than a few times.
I'm on bio-identical hormones since my LSH/BSO. There was a month in between that I dealt with the hot flashes, and I found having a small fan (battery operated) that I could carry with me very helpful. As well as the Chillow - I love both of mine. I use one on my pillow, and the other I keep by my bed to lay over my chest when I get hot. I've also heard that a cold wash cloth on the back of th neck helps, as well as placing your feet on an ice pack.
But definitely talk to your doctor about other options of medicines to help you deal with the menopause symptoms.
Wishing you the best with your surgery and after. {Hugs}
