Bummed
Well I had my hysterectomy (uterus only) on oct 11. had internal bleeding and had to go back in at 1 wk post op (oct 18). i think my dr is just incompetent. and am very depressed. my recovery has been very slow although i've only been out of the hospital this 2nd time since friday. but i am nauseous. went in today for an xray of kidneys/etc. to make sure there were no blockages. fine. nothing. no temp. i'm doing ok. i knew this surgery was major. i just thought it would be a surgery where every day you feel a bit better. so far that's not been the case. it's like 2 steps forward 1 back here. anyone else feel like this? i DID have adenomyosis and a bit of endometriosis too. so i know i didn't do this for nothing. i just really don't like my dr. once the post op visit is done i am definitely finding a new dr. ugh. anyone esle feel like this? please tell me i'm not alone. i think my hormones are kicking in or NOT and i'm very moody. i do have my ovaries though. what's the thought on this? i didn't think mentally i'd have much of a change, since i kept everything except the uterus. hmm.

Yes, although I didn't have you're problem, I do feel like my whole recovery has been 2 or 3 steps forward and then 1 step back. One of my problems, for example, is that I'm not sleeping at night. Yesterday, I consulted with a private case for 2 hours over coffee, then went to the Dr., and then went to my son's soccer game. I was plenty tired last night and in some discomfort, yet I still couldn't sleep. I asked the Dr. about this yesterday and he says there's no reason for it since I still have my overies and I know they're working, but it's happening. I'm being to think I have the problem when I do too much, which I did yesterday. Still, I am on the mend and each new day is a new day. Hope today you are feeling better than you did yesterday. I'm sending well wishes your way.

Niki....I have had some complications (busted incision) so my recovery is not going as well as I had "planned" either. I know how you feel about "two steps forward and one back". I just feel like I have to take it as it comes and work through whatever issues arise and know that things will work out in the end. I do get emotional. First week or so I was ok. second week infection/busted incision, etc. so I didn't feel well enough to "be moody". Third and fourth week seem to be recuperating a little better and gaining a little strength back but can cry at the drop of a hat. I will be doing just fine and then boom....think of something and just boohoo. I knew it was major surgery and doc had warned me I would have zero energy for 4 weeks at least. But the busted incision/infection has caused me to be able to do even less than I had hoped even if I do get the energy to do something.
I hope you are feeling better. Just try to take things a day at a time (or even moment to moment) and just know that things will get better as it goes along. Just try to get through the emotions/moods, etc. as you can and know that it will pass as you heal and get your strength back.
Keep chatting here. I have found this site to be so awesome and have gotten so much "support" here. Just talk to us here and know we are all here for you!

I'm sorry that you are feeling so bummed. This is major surgery and it does take time to recover from it. Your body is healing and you need to rest so that happens. If you had internal bleeding you need a little extra time. Take care of yourself and take it easy. 4-5 weeks things will seem a little better and then by 6-8 you'll probably actually feel pretty well. It's only been two weeks. Try to be patient.

Remember that two steps forward and one back is still forward progression. It will get better.

Hey Niki,
I haven't had near the complications that you've experienced, and yet, I am finding myself to be quite moody and emotional. I also am frustrated most of the time, don't really know why, but you're not alone in this.
I think as women we never really take 'time off' and the fact that I am so limited in what I am allowed to do is driving me nuts! I honestly think it would be different if we were having 'time off' in Hawaii instead of within the four walls of our homes.
Hugs and love,
Barbie

Niki,
I can so relate to what you are saying about the "2 steps forward and 1 step back" . That is exactly how I felt and I also thought that the recovery would get better with each passing day, but no.
I had all kinds of things from the beginning almost up to a year on some of them. I couldn't sit without being in pain for 6 weeks, bacterial infection, yeast infection, granulation treated 3x over 3 month period,sadness/depression( hrt fixed this one), bowel problems, tiredness, insomnia, severe joint aches in hips and hand(lasted a year), and sudden start of food allergies.
It did get better and it usually does, but we all have our own particular problems and some of us take longer than others. The only thing that I still have is the allergy to a foods. I was probably going to get this anyway, but I do think the hyst brought it out.
Your moodiness may be from the trauma of the surgery and all that you have been through and also sometimes the ovaries may be temporarily asleep from the shock of the uterus being removed.
I can understand being disenchanted with the dr when we have problems that we don't expect to have after this surgery. I also feel things happen even in the best of circumstances and with the best drs as well.
If you feel better with another dr after you are released, then by all means go for it. You should feel comfortable with your dr.
I am praying that your recovery will go smoothly from here on out, and hopefully no more steps backward.
Please be sure and look over the Checkpoints for post-op as there are some tips and suggestions to help get you through your recovery :

Hi nikimcn,
I want to add my encouragment here too. I agree with what has been said here. At only two weeks post op I was still barely able to do anything. I had spent two weeks mostly in bed.
We are all different, but especially since you had this complication it isn't unusual for you to still be feeling pretty newly post op- because you are.
I'm just wondering about your ovaries. Did you know they can go into shock when you have surgery and not function at all or at least not full capacity for a while? Mine did this. It could be why you're feeling so emotional. Try to give yourself some slack and don't have any expectations too quickly. Get your rest and let your body heal. Like has been said a few weeks will make so much difference.
's, Rita
