TVH and large fibroids

Hello eveyone,

I was wondering if anyone here has had a TVH with a large uterus. I will eventually need a hysterectomy but I would rather have it done vaginally. I just don't like the thought of being cut open! I guess I'm a big baby. Anyway my Dr. says I would have to have a vertical incision, but I've heard of Dr's that can do a TVH no matter how large the uterus. Can anyone offer any insight? thanks a bunch!

TVH and large fibroids

Hi,

Yes, basically if the uterus is too large the dr doesn't feel like there is enough room to remove it vaginally. If he gets in there and tries to get it out but can't, he would have to stop that procedure and then go take it out abdominally. It would put you through longer time of surgery and maybe at risk. I am sure there is a particular size that is the limit if it can come out vaginally.

If you feel that you want to find out or heard about some dr that can do it regardless of size, then maybe make some appointments and get some other opinions .

The dr wants to do what is best and safe for you and your particular health situation.

TVH and large fibroids

My Dr. told me I need a traditional abdominal hysterectomy. Not sure that was the way I wanted to go, I talked with a surgeon who specializes in laparoscopic hysterectomies in my area.

Even though I have a large fibroid (4 month) in the back wall of my uterus he thinks he can get it via laparoscopic in pieces through my abdomen and the surgery should take about as long as the traditional surgery with half the recuperation time. That day he had done the same surgery on a woman who had twice the size uterus as me.

Be cautious. He has performed these type of procedures for over three years. From what he told me, there are other doctors trying this but are far less experienced which can cause the surgery to take much longer and not have as good of results. Check out your surgeon carefully. Good luck.

if i'm not mistaken, my dr informed me that as long as the uterus is no bigger than 250 gms, then the surgery can be performed vaginally.

Weight of the uterus vs. Pregnancy size??

How does the surgeon know if the uterus is 250 grams or WHAT it weighs.??. My Dr. just told me that mine was the size of a 14 week pregnancy but never mentioned the weight.
