Can't Get My Rings Off - HELP!!!
Hey, guys.....my surgery is scheduled for next Thursday (8/2) and I cannot get my wedding rings off!!!!! I've tried soap, lotion, Windex, even Preparation H!!!!! The thought of having them cut off is totally depressing, but I need to know if they're going to make me take them off. If I take everything else off, do you think they'll let me slide?

Not sure if they'll let it slide or not.
What about drinking lots of water? Maybe you are retaining it? Try right when you get out of bed to take them off, I believe we are less "puffy" then.
Hope you can get them off w/o cutting them.

Can't Get My Rings Off - HELP!!!
julster
I couldn't get my rings off either. They told me, at the hospital, that they obviously come across this problem all the time and the solution is to cover them with tape, which they did with me.
Try not to worry too much ~ I've only heard of rings being cut off in dire medical emergencies.
Take care!

Can't Get My Rings Off - HELP!!!
I had surgery once years ago. My DS, when he was about seven years old, won a ring for me at a school carnival. (He said he would have won the one with the "diamonds" but didnt have enough tickets for that one.)
I wore that ring everywhere. When I went for my surgery, I told them that it hadn't been off my finger since I put it on years earlier. They understood and put tape around it and let me keep it on.

Try soaking in the tub, they might come off after that. But don't try in the morning as you fingers tend to swell during the night if you have left your rings on. And try the bath trick in the evening. Soak your hands in the tub for about a half hour, it might do the trick.

No Worries!
You will be fine
They do actually come across this ALL THE TIME! They will not force you to cut your ring off. This is actually more common then you might think. As a few of the women above said, they will simply just cover it with tape.

Can't Get My Rings Off - HELP!!!
Keep trying. Even though every dr. is different, mine wasn't. Nurses told me a half hour before I was taken to OR, to get my wedding band off, I had taken all other jewerly off and left them at home, I asked if they could just tape it. They said if it was up to them they would, but if I go in the OR with my wedding band on the Dr. will CUT IT OFF anyway. I took my ring off, felt bad, but my mom put it back on me the second I got back to my room. Call your Dr. and ask them what happens if you can't get it off.

I had the same problem and tried EVERYTHING (including the dental floss trick, ice, Prep. H, etc., none of which worked) and I ended up with a swollen ring finger. To make matters more upsetting, I got mixed mesages from the hospital staff. One nurse at the pre-op appt., said don't worry, we'll tape it on your finger. The anesthesia nurse had the last word and she had told me to get them off. Yes, it's rare that they need to be cut off in an emergency (for heart failure, I think) in the OR, but I didn't want that to even be an issue. If my life had been in danger, why complicate the situation with the hospital staff having to worry about getting my rings off? So, with tears in my eyes, I went to a jewelry store and they cut them off for free. They advised that I wait a few months to come back and have them resized (let's face it, they're too small) and repaired. Don't know what that's going to cost, though! I hadn't taken them off in 20 years! It's upsetting, but looking at the big picture, better safe than sorry and they can be repaired.

Can't Get My Rings Off - HELP!!!
I had to have mine cut off. I asked if I had to take them off and the hospital advisor told me that either I get them off, or they would cut them off in the OR. So, I went to my jeweler and had 7 rings cut off.
I was actually surprised, it will only cost me $25 each to have them put back in shape.
My advice, check with the hospital before you go in.
