Liquid diet and bowel prep

I have read several threads where most doctors want you to go on a liquid diet before surgery and are giving their patients a bowel prep before surgery. My doctor has not mentioned either and my surgery is in 2 days. I am having a LAVH with possible bso and a P/E repair. I am really worried about my first bowel movement. But hey I guess I can put myself on a liquid diet and take a laxative.
Please let me know what ya'll experiences where. Thanks, Joan

Liquid diet and bowel prep

I didn't have to go on a liquid diet or bowel prep before my surgery; TAH/BSO. Couldn't eat or drink after midnight the night before. I was in the hospital for three days and by the fourth day; I was having problems going so I used Metamucil and finally had a bowel movement next day. Sounds gross, but I felt GREAT!!!!

Liquid diet and bowel prep

Hi, I had a tah/bso and was not told to go on a liquid diet or do a bowel prep. Each dr seems to have their own routines and perferences and it's important to follow YOUR dr's orders. Please do only what your dr has ordered for you. Anything different could have possible unpleasant side effects.

If you're concerned, give your dr a call and ask. Better safe , you know!

Best wishes.

Liquid diet and bowel prep

If you read through here you'll find there's a wide variety of pre-op preparations. Some are just told not to eat anything after midnight and that's it. Some Drink nasty junk, some are on liquid diets for a couple days prior and some do enemas. When you have your pre-op they will tell you what to do. Don't do anything other than what they tell you.

My first BM wasn't bad. I had some gas pains that were unpleasant but not nearly as bad as what others have said. I armed myself with lots of bowel friendly stuff. I still take a stool softener every morning. When I got home I drank prunce juice, lots of water and peppermint tea. I ate apple/cinnamon oatmeal for breakfast and mixed it in with Fiber One cereal. I eat fruit every day. I'm pretty much back to a regular diet but I still do the same thing for breakfast. Whatever you have for breakfast wash it down with lots of water. If I get backed up for any length of time I take Milk of Magnesia.

I've kept things moving pretty well for 2 1/2 weeks so I guess I'll stick with the plan,

Liquid diet and bowel prep

Good question!

My doctor included "possible bowel resection" on my consent form because of my endo. I think that means I'm going to be doing a bowel prep.

Liquid diet and bowel prep

HI

I will be going on a liquid diet and doing the bowel prep the night before . I also have to do a enema the morning of my surgery. I believe it is because they will be working around the bowels. {cutting the uterus away from the bowel } I think it all depends on what they need to do for you. Good luck to you !

Hope you have a speedy recovery

Liquid diet and bowel prep

Yes bowel prep and clear liquid diet. The reason I was given was in case they poke a hole in something. And if I did not do it that I could have a "poop bag" on my side for a few days. This does not sound appealing to me. I go in tomorrow at 11:15 - so I am on Xanax, apple juice, jello, popsicles, antibiotics and an enema tonight. Woo Hoo - I had the preop nurse yesterday give me the directions how to do it - this sounds awful. I always try to be so lady like........

Liquid diet and bowel prep

I didn't have to do a bowel prep or liquid diet. I just couldn't eat or drink anything after midnight. I had gas pains in the castle, started passing gas on Saturday but didn't have a BM 'til Monday, after I was home. My doctor said as long as I had "good bowel sounds," was passing gas and had a little bit of an appetite, everything would be fine. They did give me Colace (stool softener) and told me to take it at home, too. The first BM was uncomfortable but I wouldn't even go as far as to say it was painful. But it sure felt good to get it out!

Good luck!
