Re: So frustrated.

Ok, my surgery is officially scheduled for Thursday at noon. Still. Again. Whatever.

I am supposed to go to the hospital at 9 a.m. so they can take blood (in case I need some during surgery) but that was it as far as my pre-op went. No bowel prep. Just "don't eat anything after midnight".

Re: So frustrated.

I didn't have a bowel prep, either... That's one less thing to worry about, I guess.

I do have to agree that if your ovaries are healthy, you should fight to keep them if that's what you want. It's your body.

Age alone is absolutely NOT a determining factor in whether or not your ovaries should be removed along with your uterus!

If your doctor is not absolutely clear about this, then if I were you, I wouldn't go through with the surgery at this time. Go for an additional medical opinion (or two, or three, or nine) and continue to research your options. Maybe the ovaries will be a problem and will need to come out; but if they are healthy, there's no reason they can't stay.

Ovaries don't "stop" producing hormones at menopause; rather, they gradually decrease hormone production over time. They never really stop. On the other hand, if you have your ovaries surgically removed, you'll go into surgical menopause, which by all accounts I've seen is much more severe than natural menopause. Why go through that if you don't have to?

Best wishes to you.

Re: So frustrated.

Oh I did tell her that I want to keep my ovaries. She is of the notion that they should come out after age 45. So I told her, that I think I am at higher risk for heart disease and other risks from having the ovaries removed, than I am for ovarian cancer and she relented. She wants me to get the left one removed because she said it gets hidden and harder to see in the abdomen after a hysterectomy. She said the right one stays more clearer in view. I dunno about that, or even what to think about that. She said I can wait til the day of my surgery to let her know.

I did finally decide to go ahead and have my cervix removed though because apparently there is no way to guarantee 100% uterus removal unless the cervix goes too.

I definitely do NOT want the complications of left over uterine tissue to contend with. So yeah, I am worried about vaginal prolapse, but I kept up with my kegels all my life and I guess that is the best I can do anyway. Hopefully she will do a good job of tacking everything in place so it won't fall out.
