The pre-op planning is stressing me out!

As I've noticed many of you are, I'm a type A/OCD personality and planning for my daVinci TLH on 1/22/14 is stressing me out more than the actual surgery. With a husband who travels frequently and no family in the state (Texas), I'm trying to line up my support structure now. I think I'll have my parents in town while my DH is in Calgary for a week and my 7 year-old daughter's babysitter is more than willing to work some overtime if it meshes with her class schedule. I might even be able to get her to spend some nights to help with the bedtime and morning routines.

Then there's the office trying to plan when I'll be back (I'm a pediatrician and appointments are scheduled months in advance). So far, I'm taking almost three weeks off and then the first week back is half-time. After reading all of the posts, I'm thinking I might be too optimistic with that schedule. We stand ALL day in our practice. No doctor's chairs in the exam room or at our charting desks.

What I'm discovering is that I'm going to have to ask for help - even pay for it - and that's tough for me to do.

Re: The pre-op planning is stressing me out!

I am in shape and thought I would breeze through this.... What I learned, the first 2 weeks you will do nothing. Rest means rest. Rest means staying in bed. My bed tray, laptop, and I became one. I found even sitting up and lifting the tray was a no no, I learned to walk the tray away to get out of bed. Recovery is like a dance, sometimes you step back, and maybe sideways, but remember you are healing. Gas, UTI's, dermatitis from the mesh panties, it is all part of the process. I thought I could go to parties and shopping, this was not work, what I did not get, I would be soooo tired. Even my meditation group, 1.5 of sitting, I hurt from sitting upright and still. The one great thing that I did, I prepared so many frozen meals and snacks that I had healthy foods to eat. The week prior to my surgery I changed my diet to chicken and fish, and eventually to veggies and rice and the day before I juiced, I think it really helped the bowels. I also arranged to have fresh veggie juices delivered to the hospital! As for control, you will be a passenger. It is a good life lesson, things will not be how you may want them to be, it will work out the way it is supposed to be. Good luck, and keep me posted!

Re: The pre-op planning is stressing me out!

Desertmoonwoman is totally correct!
I am also type A and I have been going crazy sitting still. BUT I only have one chance to heal so......here I sit......
First 2 weeks are rest, rest, and more rest. 3rd week is some moving and more rest. Week 4 I felt a bit better and wanted to do more but still tired easily. Now-week 5 I am SO ready to do more. Unfortunately my job is quite strenuous so I am waiting until my next post op checkup before doing more around the house to get back into shape.
Best of luck on your surgery and recovery and dont try to be super woman , at least for a few weeks
